Afternoon gentleman.

My neighbour has a 2005 Renault Clio petrol, I believe it to be an extreme. It has just been recovered back home for her as it will not start. I havnt looked at it yet but from what she said it cranks but will not start.

I know its a long shot and it could be anything, but wondered if there was any common faults it may be? It didnt break down it was parked up and wouldnt start when she came back to it.

Thankd in advance.

Coil packs and crankshaft sensors are pretty common I think. If its the crank sensor, you might get away with just cleaning it.

Cheers will have a look, easily accessible?

Additional information, the recovery guy must of had a code reader and told her it had a fault code for ''throttle position sensor, circuit A''. I also have a code reader which shows no faults, she said the recovery guy cleared them for her!banghead

If thats the only fault code it wouldn`t stop it starting anyway. Guessing that its a 1.2, then the crank sensor is easy to get too. Not quite so easy on a 1.4/1.6 especially if its auto. Normally they will cause problems with wasm starting, disconnect and reconnect will normally sort the poor connection that causes the problem. The other favourite is the immobiliser. Does the light flash faster than normal when switching on the ignition? or does it stay on solid? It should be flashing slow, switch on and it should be solid for a few seconds then go off. This can help identify where the problem may lie.

Thanks Mr Jenks,

Just had a look crank sensor looks easy enough (its a 1.4). Have no tools at home so will take that off and clean it 1st thing tomorrow.

With regards to the immobiliser,
-unlock the car, get in and the red LED in the centre of the cluster flashes slowly. Wait a few seconds and it stays on constantly. Is this correct or should it go off?

Thanks.

I don't think it'd be the immobiliser - I would expect it not to crank if this was the case.

I would imagine it should go off.

Immobilisor may work by shutting off the power supply to the injectors or something, thus preventing it from starting as there is no fuel?

Try cranking it and see if there is any petrol in the pots afterwards

Turn on the ignition, the light should stay on for a few seconds then go off. Immobiliser fault shuts out ecu software for ignition not starter or fuel, although if you keep trying the starter will eventually only run for a couple of seconds to prevent excess fuel soaking the cat. Really, every time a Clio is non start the immobiliser is top of the list. Keys fail more often than anything you could begin to dream of.

Ok thanks,

I have tried the spare key and its the same, so i can probably eliminate the key.
Where is the immobiliser unit found? Maybe I could unplug it for a while or disconnect the battery maybe? Any way of bypassing it?

Or possibly there could be a fault on the ignition barrel, I presume there is a pick up for the chip in the key.

Thanks again gents, all this is very helpfull and gives me a head-start tomorrow, I have very little knowledge of this product.

If the light changes from flashing to solid then the key is recognised by the immobiliser, as said the light should then go off. If it stays on which it sounds like it is, your problem is probably that the injection ecu is not switching on. Normal cause for that is a corroded wire in the loom between the fuse and relay board and the computer.
