i have been scouring the classic claifieds and have thought would a 2cv be an ideal first car

pros
small engine
easy to maintain
cheap as chips
comfy
history/classic

cons
rusty
slow
unsafe
not fun in winter

Yep - I think it would be a lot of fun too.
If you fancy a little more pace you can fit the 1021cc engine to it from the Ami or GS, or a flat twin BMW bike engine! Someone on REtrorides got stopped at 91mph in his!!

Ok i am biased(see profile)great all round fun ,fabulous in the winter it's those skinny tyres.Engine massively undertuned so nearly double the horsepower possible. My ex employee was pulled at 96mph on the motorway(downhill) and got away with a warning as "the speedo stops at 75" worked.
However the only ones cheap as chips are rotten,a good one is probably more than the price of a (please forgive me)decent saxo or C2.
Even after 25years, mine still makes me smile every time i drive it.

I thought I was about to get stuck behind one in some mountain roads near Cannes. You know those roads that reward a bit of shiite driving with a 1000ft tumble down rough rocks.

Driver was an old fella with the standard Gauloise hanging out of his mouth but he knew the roads and I could barely keep up with him in my 2.5L Beemer. In fact I was shiiting it.

His car was leaning like a motorbike as he hurtled round the bends on those skinny tyres.

Hired a 2CV years ago and it was great fun and my first car was a Renault 6, think Renault 4 but with a bigger boxier body, and it had the same push/pull gear shift.

Don't get me wrong i adore the 2cv and have done since childhood, but as a first car nowadays when a good one is going to set you back at least £2000 if not £3000.
Oh and I know what i did with my first car,i crashed it.

For your very first car buy something you have no love for that when you damage it as damage it you will it doesn't cost a fortune to repair/replace.A £300 stter thatyou can afford to change after a year when you have beaten it into submisssion.
Then buy something to cherish.
