Since my car's lights get ever-more dim as I leave them on when the car is running- I'm pretty certain that I need an alternator.

It gets to the point where the the stereo actually cuts out in time with the indicators and my headlights are reduced to sidelights.

Since the car was sat not moving since September till now (due to me finally getting round to fitting a new gearbox!) I'm guessing that the alternator has be subject to damage from being sat still and getting brittle brushes internally?

any idea if the alternator on this car (1.8i 8v - XU7JP) is unique to it's kind- or whether other 405 (diesel/petrol) alternators will fit? or whether all peugeot XU alternators fit... Alternators if i'm honest isn't exactly my strong point.
I'm going up the scrappy tomorrow morning- so any snappy suggestions would be massively helpful if i'm to know what to get!?

Thanks in advance!!

Its always best to use one from the same model,(or a 306 with the same 1.8 XU)There are lots of variants,PAS,A/C etc.So take the old one with you and check the pulley, brackets and connections.Just a thought? Have you put a meter on the back of the alternator to check its output?? and, did you connect all the earth leads back on the gearbox? and, just check the lead from the alternator to the starter motor? just make sure it is the alternator and not something after the gearbox job.
