Possible HGF Renault Clio 1.2 Grande

I've no idea what the relevance of the Grande is!
So, the wife moaned about odd noises coming from her engine yesterday and today an array of warning lights came on, including temperature. No coolant in the tank, lots of white smoke coming out the back when the throttle's revved. No sign of mayo though.
The AA man reckons it's the head gasket.
Is this likely on these cars? If it's unlikely but possible is there a way I can cheaply test myself for it?
If it is likely, I quite fancy having a go at fixing it, after all I'd like a Lotus one day
- is there somewhere recommended I can buy a kit of the bits online? (Links would be good).
