Dilemma: Clio 197/Rs200/Megane 225?
Discussion
I am currently in a position whereby I cannot make a decision and need some help.
Do I opt for the Clio 197, Rs200 or the Megane?
I am swaying towards the 197 simply because of its looks at the minute, in terms of costs. It works out around the same for me.
As for the Rs200 it is beautiful from the back but I just cannot get used to that front end, most will say this is a stupid statement but considering I am driving a 1.2 2006 Clio - I want to get my 'proper' car purchase right first time round.
Help

If there is something you dont like about a car (the 200) and there is a cheaper version you like (the 197)then I would go for the cheaper car. You get virtually the same drive from a 197 as you will from a 200 and you will probably afford a better spec too. Visually its a personal choice, I think the 200 is a better looking car than the 197 but some will obviously disagree. The Megan is an altogether different car. Hope you make the right choice !

Can you explain the main differences from a buyers perspective?
Most I see online state '197 3Door cup'...
Cup is lower, stiffer and a beastie in the bends. For an out of the box car it is very focused. Most I see online state '197 3Door cup'...
The standard set-up is by no means poor, outstanding in fact, and if I was choosing a 197 as my main car cup springs would be too hard imho.
Try both cup and non, see which you prefer.

I'm biased and will say get the 200. The 197 front looks old to me, if you are more used to it the 200 will not look better...until you get a 200 and when you get used to it you will probably wonder why you preferred the looks of the 197.
The 200 has improvements on the 197, better gearing, economy (?) etc. Do research on renaultsport.co.uk forums.
The 225 is a different beast, but still good. It is faster, more refined but can be a handful with torque steer. If you can, get the R26 as opposed to the normal 225 as the R26 has LSD which reduces the torque steer.
The 200 will put a much bigger smile on your face, it is more raw and has great handling, sound and chuckability. The 200 has received so many great reviews from car magazines in the last 12 months you almost wonder if RUK is paying them.
At the end of the day I would say decide on a 197 or 200 and then compare the whichever you choose (197 or 200) with the 225 by test driving both. I was about to get a 225, had a test drive in one (the torque steer really bothered me but still loved it) and then almost as an after thought had a go in the dealer's 200. I was then really confused but went for the 200 as it had the big grin factor.
There are lots of reviews of the 200 on the web, let me know if you want me to post or email some.

Thanks for the reply guys. As for the 197 R27 you bought, what was your previous car before that?
Hi there,No previous car as such as this is to be my fun everyday car that I can also take on the odd trackday as and when. I have just done 50,000 miles in a new Scirocco diesel which I am keeping for my wife to use as her daily driver, combined we are doing about 150 - 200 miles a day so we need two reliable cars.
I have done 155 miles in the R27 and had great fun as the acceleration and cornering are superb. It puts a constant smile on your face.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Tim
