Does anyone know the differences bewteen the mk1 and mk2 1.4 saxo engines?

i recently bought an ebay banger in need of an engine change, today i swapped the rather worse for wear mk1 engine for a lower mileage mk2 (also ebay) and im struggling to get it to run.

All the electricals and fueling have been swapped from the mk1 engine but it now misfires unless the throttle is pressed and won't idle at all. All the parts swapped from the old engine were in full working order.

I'm wondering if there is a difference in the cam/valve set up bewteen the two causing these problems.

Any help is much appreciated.

IIRC the later ones have a different rocker set up than the MK1 , think the MK2s are Roller tipped were as the MK1s are solid , it helped quieten them down a little , the ecus were different aswell

i know it sounds stupid but it sounds like you have an air intake in the inlet system or breather

Did you hear the new engine running before you bought it?

Not sure i quite understand this? do you mean an air or vacuum leak somewhere?

Didn't hear the engine running before i bought but was informed it was taken from a running rear end accident damaged vehicle so it should have no issues.

When i initially started up the new engine it accelerated hard on its own straight up to the rev limiter and sat there. It did this with no issues (mechanical at least), i had forgotten to swap the old engines flywheel sensor across. Doing this cured the hard acceleration resulted in the missfire and idle issues, leading me to believe the problem is electrical.

The way it's running appears to be as though the valve timing or ignitiion is now out. Next step is to have a look and compare the cam/valve gear i think...

The crank sensor was definatley working on the old engine and was swapped to the new one.

I should have mentioned before that the old mk1 engine was running fine prior to removal, but the bearings had gone and it was VERY noisy and on its last legs.

There is one sensor which i assumed was a knock sensor on the back of the block which perhaps foolishly i didn't swap from the old engine as it appeared the same. I have since checked and its a different part number, so i'm going to change this before doing anything else could this be the cause?
