It sounds very much like axle tramp, this is when the wheel loses traction and the wheel ends up bouncing very quickly making the loud knocking noise you talk about.

If you're not sure though get it checked out just to be safe.

Does the car drive perfectly fine apart from when pulling away and getting slight wheel spin?

I used to have a 172 a few years ago and had the same fault, apparently they all did it. Cant remember 100% remember what it was tho.

This is very common indeed.
It sounds like the engine mounts. The engine moves and knocks on the downpipe. Makes a real nasty knock.

Options.
Do what i did. Take the the battery out. Underneath is the top engine mount. Slacken the two nuts, Pull the engine forward by hand and re tighten the nuts. You should be able to move the mount around 5 to 10mm, You can see clearly from the marks where it used to sit.
This cured it for me, and if your lucky it will do yours. Otherwise its a new gearbox mount and engine mounts. Not the end of the world but its deffinatley worth this 10 min fix. I think over the years the engine just budges slightly. My mounts werent very tight.

Let us know how you get on.

Sounds like axle tramp to me rather than engine mounts. My 172 Cup used to do this occasionally. Never had a problem with engine mounts (I thought this manifested itself when going on and off the throttle sharply and getting a knock?).

Sounds like axle tramp.

Easy enough to fix - remove the lead from your shoes in the wet.

I'd be very suprised if it were "Axle Tramp" in a light weight FWD with a heavy engine over the drive wheels.
I'm willing to bet a fiver that it's related to mounts. At least give my option a try as it sold the exact same problem for me and countless others over on cliosport.net and its free. Garaages like to find things in my experience so run through the free advise first.

No probs. The mounts do need changing after around 60-70k it seems. Should feel loads better with new mounts.
