Anyone know anything about these? MPG's? Pokey enough? Calm and collected on motorways? Decent fun in the twistes (for a heavyweight diesel anyway)? etc etc. Also, how do they handle a remap?

Have a look at the 1.6HDi(90hp) instead pretty much the same running costs as the 1.4 but better to drive hth

Yes, surprisingly good. 1.4 Hdi is not that heavy and does not hamper handling at all. Very neutral, excellent ride. 1.4 Hdi so much better to drive than 1.4 75 petrol too.

I've had one since January. Its a 52 plate and is on 69,000 miles now.

Economy is crazy, runs on fresh air. Doesnt use much in the way of oil either. 7000 miles after my oil change I put in 300ml as a topup. Diesel wise I am averaging 65mpg from a tank, and thats really mixed driving, lot of commuting to Edinburgh and back. It really doesnt like Shell Fuelsave diesel, hampers performance across the rev range. Likes Asda/Tesco/Esso/Jet and V Power, you actually feel a difference with V Power.

Mine is an LX, electric windows, mirrors, remote locking, air con, front fogs. I think the mirrors are heated as well... Nice 6 speaker CD as too.

Its comfortable inside and everything is well laid out. If you've not driven a 206 before you may find the driving position a bit funny at first, but everything adjusts so its not too difficult to get comfy.

Plenty space for 4 to travel in comfort, and the boot is useful and will take the big suitcase I use for summer holidays.

Driving wise its not too bad. Performance figures suggest it to be slow however its blighted by a really, really short 1st gear. Once you are on the move its fine, and there's some turbo fun to be had 2000-3500rpm.

Will sit at 70mph+ all day long, just under 2500rpm. I've done Fife-Aberdeen many times in mine.

Other point on the engine - this engine runs very cool, HGF paranoia set in after a week with me - the temp gauge will sit at 70 to 80 deg in normal driving - I saw 90 deg in a long traffic queue once. If you look online you'll find a few threads about this sort of thing, including one on a Peugeot forum where they are trying all they can to get the fan to kick in... its just not needed.

Handling is competent, when you consider this car first came out in 1998 - I find it better than the Clio and Fiesta of same vintage.

My brakes are drums at the back and it doesnt have ABS, however in the winter so far it has been great. 175 tyres help. Only needed a push once and we've had about 13" of snow in total here! Low front bumper can be a bit of a snow plough though. My washer jets have yet to freeze, -18 here this week!

Running cost wise, road tax dropped from £35 to £30 this year (113 or 119g/km co2, I cant remember which). Fully comp insurance with add ons was £225 in May (29 year old professional male, 10 years NCB, private parking, low risk postcode).

I've had a couple of repairs to the car. Firstly the crank pulley. On all HDi models across the Peugeot range, it seems these are made of cheese and will go at some point. Dealer wants £325 fitted or £110 to supply. I got one fitted from a local indy at the price of dealer to supply only !

I have replaced my pollen filter - cheap and easy to do (£5). Tried to get an air filter but both suppliers on ebay let me down! Oil change was done at Kwik-Fit for less than what I could have sourced an oil and filter for - and they used Mobil (£30-approx). I also broke a wishbone arm via a pothole, and this helped wreck a tyre - £22 for a brand new Admiral tyre...not a big name but its worked well in the snow!

Overall, a great wee car, smallest car I've owned for 9 years. My 6th French car as well - dont believe all the myths, the only one I had trouble with was a Laguna!

Last photo there - cleared the snow off it, and some away from the front and it drove out of my parking space, followed by an immediate left, immediate right, all downhill, no spinning or skidding !

Power in these early ones is 68bhp and 113lb/ft. Later models are 16v and have 90bhp. Remapping mine would get me 90bhp.

The 2.0 HDi has 90bhp, but isn't 16v.

The 1.6 GTi HDi has 110bhp, but is 16v.

I know of a few people with the 1.4HDi's and are getting up and over the 100bhp mark.

Must be 16v versions ?

If its the 8v version, 68bhp > 100bhp, thats a serious increase!

100bhp and nearly 80mpg on a run....hold me back!

Interesting to note - I guess it would be an easy enough switch if someone really wanted ?

Was the 16v used in the 307 version ?

Wonder if the versions in the Fiesta and Mini were different too.

The 307's didn't get the 16v unit either (same power as the 2.0HDi) the Fiesta'a all ran the 8v unit and the early Mini's did as well

Just the little 8v engines. There was only a petrol 1.4 16v engine.

This is with a remap, full exhaust system and in at least one case a FMIC.

There's a few 1.4HDi's on www.206info.co.uk if you're interested

I like the lil Pug, i have a 2005 one, I absolutely love it, the fuel lines went on mine not long ago but other than that its been spot on!!.

I get 55-60 mpg depending how i drive it.

I was offered a remap at 110bhp - that is a nice big increase!!
