Hello all,

As mentioned in my previous thread when I bought aforementioned car I felt it was down on power.

Well now I have driven a near identical car 1998 406 1.9 DT with nearly as many miles on the clock and it was significantly faster.

My car runs fine but feels like its strangled, it really struggles to rev past 3000rpm in any gear other than 1st or 2nd and will not go above 4000rpm at all.

It feels like its not boosting but squeezing an intake pipe and reving it up does show that there is boost before the intake manifold (you can feel it pressureize and force your hand open, crude test I know)

I would like to fix it (mainly as its only doing 38-39mpg because I am having to hammer it) but dont want to spend any money at a garage.

The reason I ask here is I have no pre-existing knowledge of French cars at all so someone may be able to point me in the direction of the known faults on these so I can investigate.

Cheers

Fit a boost gauge temporarily and change the air filter. Let us know what boost you are achieving.

What colour smoke are you getting out of the back under load?

Boost gauge will cost money I suspect, but I'll see if I can source one.

Smoke out the back seems like normal 252k Diesel engine smoke really, blue, grey and a puff of black. Its not really using oil.

I have changed the air filter, which has made a minor difference.

Have you checked it is actually getting full throttle?

It sounds like you either have a knackered turbo (hence blue smoke - should only be black really or white when cold) or a boost leak. A boost leak is far more difficult to find and the turbo will still spin. Get someone to rev it up while you check under the bonnet for anything obviously leaking.

Oh, and replace the D seal gasket thing under the intercooler. They cost pennies from Pug but are common failures.

Thefull thottle test is an obvious thing that I haven't yet done. Although I would expect it to do better MPG if I wasn't getting full throttle.

D gasket you say? I have no idea what this is but I will try to find out.

Does the 406 have an overhead intercooler? If it's the same setup as the 306 it's right on top of the engine and very obvious - the D seal is the gasket underneath the intercooler.
