Got the missus an 04 plate 2.0 petrol. Its got about 80k on the clock with regular services. The car has developed a vibration around the engine upon start up. Whilst sitting at tick-over (approx 800rpm) the vibration travels through the whole car. If i increase the revs slightly, say up to 1k, the vibration disappears. The car revs freely through the rev range. I have had it plugged into a diagnostic it tool and it claimed "misfire on cylinder 4". I have since changed the plugs and coil pack but the problem persists. If it was a compression problem on cylinder 4, would it still rev freely? Any help appreciated.

Is there anyway of checking an injector rather than just replacing it? Looks like the bosch ones are about £80 each.

Some diagnostics can actuate injectors so you can hear it operating, can you see what colour the injectors are? Dependant on colour i might have a used one you can try.

Very common on these engines for this to happen, it's the hydraulic lifters they are prone to failure and cause misfires at idle. Sometimes an oil flush can cure it, other wise it's a new set of lifters.

Just to give you another angle on this. I have had exactly the same problem for some time. Initially I changed all the plugs, serviced, checked for a misfire and injector faults - no problems found and vibration still there. Then the cat/manifold joint broke so I repaired it and noticed that the vibration went away... for a day. Had another look and the centre box on the exhaust had cracked. Replaced that, all the clamps and the bottom engine mount and it's gone completely.

An update on this one! Car ran fine for a while, then after been parked up for a couple of weeks due to bad weather, the started the usual vibration before engine management light and stop flashed up. Again plugged it into the diagnostic tool and "Massive combustion failure" on cylinder 4 appeared. Coil pack off and plugs checked again, nothing untoward. Operated the injectors and No4 had a "tic tic" noise instead of the usual "tick tock". Swopped injector 4 into 3 to see if we could isolate the problem further. The cat had a rattle so the cat and mid-section was also replaced at this time. Even put some injector cleaner in! Fast forward to today, started up, 5 minutes later the vibration is back and then engine management light with "Cat Converter Fault" and "Anti-Pollution fault". Sick as French Connection!! Any other views apart from putting the whole car in the bin. Prob wouldn't get collected for a month anyway!

Replace the suspected faulty injector, check that oil has not dribbled down the rocker cover and pooled around the injectors. Spent a while trying to fix an anti pollution fault on a 607 which turned out to be a shagged injector. Interesting diagnostic system in modern Pugs...

Problem solved. It was the injector. Running sweet now. Thanks for the help.

Spoke too soon. Fault is back. Started car up when it was cold and straight away, anti pollution fault / cat fault and eng management light on. Plugged back into diagnostics this morn and the following fault codes: P1340, P0304, P0341. Checked the cam sensor and nothing seems amiss. The guy I use seems to think that it could be a valve sticking so going to try an oil flush. Any other advice?

P1340 and P341 are both camshaft sensor faults ,so you would have to try a sensor.P0304 is no 4 cylinder misfire which could easily be injector or coil pack or at a real outside chance a sticking valve.
I would swap the injector and see if it then becomes P0301,P0302 or P0303 depending on which injector you swap it with.If it stays the same P0304 i would suspect the coil pack before a sticking valve.

We already tried swopping 3 & 4 injectors over but the fault still reappeared in Cylinder 4. The coil pack was one of the first things changed. How hard is it to change the cam sensor?

Hi All I have had the same problem on my Peugeot 307cc tried and changed allsorts,
using a thinner oil helped quite a lot but problem still there ,had oil drained and flushed car judders after 30 seconds for about five mins .
was told to drain oil again and put 3 to 4 litres of diesel in and let it tick over for half an hour not done this as yet but seriously thinking of it,
got a recall letter from Peugeot saying the drain plug in the spare wheel bay needs to be changed,
I replied to them about the juddering problem they said if enough people complain to them with the same problem they will recall and investigate,
also my car when running smooth smells of petrol now and then .
any thoughts
