I'm thinking about buying one of these two with possibly a Clio 182 cup thrown in there. I'm more interested at this stage in knowing more about reliability issues and potential work that might need doing on a higher mileage car, especially the 106/306 as they will be older.

Cheers

Rear beams on both the 106 and the 306 may well need attention by now, I know the 106's are getting very dodgy about now. 306 will be better but would benefit from new seals.

I know more about the 306 than the 106, and TBH there aren't too many issues with them at this stage, they don't really rust, engines are solid but expensive to fix if the cambelt goes, make sure this is done, or that you do it ASAP. Bent valves will make the engine sound very 'tappetty'.

Other than that it's just a question of replacing the bushes when you can be arsed, the rear wishbone bush on the front, known as the P bush gets a hard life and tends to go, which explains clunking from the front, it's and easy swap however. new rear bushes will sharpen up the handling too.

The GTI-6 is a fantastic car though, sweet engine and great handling, performance bargain ATM and very practical really.

The 106 1.6 Rallye is a pastiche of the original. Think of it as their VTR as the 106 GTI is like a Saxo VTS.

The 306 Rallye is much more of a "proper" hot hatch. Of the two, it'd have to be that one.

Unless of course, you can find a decent 1.3 Rallye. Oh yes. Now THAT'S what a Peugeot Rallye should be.

cheers for the comments all very helpful, am also getting some good help on the 306gti6 forum.

It also seems that the differences in the way the 306gti6 and Rallye drive are few and far between. I like the look of the rallye better but the benefit of the weight saving is apparently not that marked?

rallye is exactly the same, just no air con, fog lights or electric windows. The prices they command are ridiculous in my opinion.

I think they may have had some sound deadening left out too.

To be honest, as a daily car, I'd have the GTI-6. The weight saving bits on the Rallye are more of an inconvenience than the benefits they offer, and overall the car will be cheaper to buy, and comes in more colours.

If you want a "real" Rallye experience, look for a 106 1.3 Rallye.

I have been running a GTI-6 for well over a year now, and it has been awesome!

Still pulls like a train, loads of fun, and surprises a few people.

Just carry a spare pair of pants for any high speed lift off oversteer moments!

Am I the only 306 driver who's never experienced this much-vaunted lift-off oversteer?

You are probably driving it correctly then!

I have had a couple of oh oh, I am going way too fast for this corner, lift off mega oversteer moments.

Put cheap tyres on the back and drive like a dick hero.

Just put a full set of fresh T1Rs on it and it's got phenomenal grip in the wet and I'll never approach the limit in the dry. It'd run rings around my Elise in anything other than dry conditions. Must confess that tail-out behaviour on the road isn't my thing, but nice to know it's available if I ever end up on track.

I had my first french arse out moment the other night going a bit too fast around a "chicane"

They are a good drive, the french torsion barred(sp) car's if you haven't had one before smile

Well i had a 205 GTi a long time ago but i imagine the 306 is far better balanced and more progressive. especially as the 205 had Konis (which i won in a performance car magazine comp no less!)

possibly.

Drive onto a (empty!) roundabout in the wet, mash the pedal, get power understeer, lift off, get oversteer, boot the throttle and you're away with a missive grin on your face!

Can also be done more subtly, but I found that the best technique for practising.
