I have owned and loved my L-reg (1993) Renault Clio for 8 years but recently it failed it's MOT as it needs a new part for the steering rack. Unfortunately, I can't afford the £400 work it requires to pass. I can't bear the idea of my lovely car going for scrap - it has a great engine and good bodywork. It would be a great first car for someone. Can anyone advise what I should do - I really don't want it scrapped and I'm not bothered about getting money for it. Just want it to have a good home. Has anyone been in the same situation? Can anyone advise?

Thanks.

What does it need? Get a rack from a scrappies and do it yourself?

Is that the garage that done the MOT that want £400 to fix it?

I can guarantee you can get it done cheaper than that. As said above, can pick up the part second hand, and then you must know a friend of a friend that is a mechanic that can fix it on the cheap?

I'm sure you'll be able to get it sorted for a lot less than that, and if that was all it failed on, you'll get another year out of it.

Which bit is broken? Clios of that age are being scrapped and broken very regularly so bits are plentifull and cheap.

I smell a dodgy rat of a garage here nono What exactly did it fail on? What does it say on the failure sheet?

I'm guessing you've got a 1.2 or 1.4 with non power steering? Will be a hell of a lot cheaper to replace the whole lot, rack and column if you get 1 from a scrappy. Have a look on ebay, I got a rack & column for mine for £45 delivered, don't give up on it so easily wink

I would guess it's an inner steering arm?

Rare for something to be wrong inside the actual rack?

You can put a Clio on axle stands on the sills and have the front subframe dropped with the rack bolted to it within an hour. An exchange rack won't be more than £100 and a back street garage should only be looking at £40p/h labour rate and a 2.5hr job I estimate it being around £200 for the whole job.

But...newer, better cars are just so damn cheap these days. A friend recently picked up a 51plate Passat with 130k miles for £600 with 10months MOT and 3months tax!

Can you scan the fail sheet in?

I just did a load of work on a Clio inc the rack for WAY less than that...
