I've owned one for about 18 months now and I do about a 1,000 miles a week in it (maily very short journeys), I can get about 35-40mpg if I try.

The most common fault is the rear axles. They cost about £250 for a reconditioned one plus exchange of your old unit so be sure to check for play in the rear wheels, give them a really good pull, any movement at all is bad news.

Also there was no really changes in them, the later models have half leather seats and more modern clocks thats about it really.

No serious changes, the ECU changed towards the end to a 3 plug setup not a single plug. Don't think this really changed much though and either the earlier or later are fine. Better just to look for a well looked after example with service history. Try and find a standard one rather than one which has been messed around with too much.

I've got a xsi with a tuned gti engine up for sale. Let me know if you're interested.

Try taking one for a test drive, if you have big feet you may not get on with the 'tight' pedal area.

Ive owned a gti for the last 7 years , been on track with it in standard form , but now really only a show car , but it's still my daily hack .
I do about 12/14k a year and its been a Brilliant car .
Rear axle's tend to camber but ive had mine done , so alls good , apart from that its abs sensors , and to be honest thats about it , mine has done 125k and never (touch wood) misses a beat ,been round the "Ring" and been to France in it and all was good .
Ive now dropped mine on Bilsteins by 40mm and well worth it , also running 16" wheels with 195/40/ tyres .
