Hi all,

I haven't frequented this PH forum before so please be kind wink

To cut a long story short, I need to buy a car this weekend and have decided to get back into a facelift 172 or 182 after having had a 172 Cup few years ago and been very pleased with it. I just can't seem to find anything else in my budget that would be half as fun with similar practicality.

The PH search facility is down so I was hoping some people might be kind enough to write a couple of lines (or even bullet points) of things I need to look out for when buying one now, bearing in mind I'm looking at 2002/2003 cars with 80-120k miles on them costing no more than £3k. Since I will be buying this weekend barring any disasters, I just want to go in armed with a bit of knowledge to reduce the chances of buying (too much of) a lemon from a dealer.

As always, any advice is much appreciated,

M

Check cambelt. Needs to have been done 5yrs/70k, boot floor for creases, oil cap for white gunk - head gasket, panel gaps for crashed ones, brakes/discs, there's loads more, but that should start you off. cliosport.net has a full buying guide, need to be a member first to access it. Worth a tenner.

If you're anywhere near Essex, then I'd be more than happy to pop along with you?

Gutted I missed this thread. I would have offered you mine. Just had the cambelt done, new dampers, rear discs and pads and clutch cable. I've spent £1500 on it in the last few months but don't really use it enough so looking to get rid.

2 owners and 40k miles, would have sold it cheap too. Oh well.
