I'm looking at changing from my Z4 to a Clio 197 to release some money. I was wondering if anyone can help on the following:

How reliable are they?
What options are 'essential'?
What to look out for?

Mine hasn't had any major trouble, or even minor really. Had it since new (march '08) and now on 28k.

There have been minor things for warranty work but tbh they're just small niggles. e.g. the B-pillar window seals come off/split, the first 1-2 minutes when starting from cold are a bit kangaroo-ey.

A lot of people have trouble with the optional Recaros wearing out the material on the bolsters. I haven't, so I don't know what people do to them. The problem actually seems to be a Recaro design issue as the leather bolsters on the Corsas are also now showing the same fault. (Essentially not enough foam between the hard plastic "wings" and the material, so the wing cuts through the foam and then the material).

In terms of options I'd definitely recommend the Cup chassis and the Recaros. I also specced the cornering lights as they come with black casings internally which set the colour of the car off better than the std silver. Xenons also came with the black infills.

There's not a great deal to look out for other than that tbh, other than the usual things you'd check with any car purchase. For further advice though I'd get yourself over to http://www.clio197.net/forum/

They're a good bunch over there, which is rare for a one-make forum. They're not that fanboi that they won't point out issues or declare that it's the greatest car ever made.
