Renault Vel Satis.

The aerial is a little stubby fin at the rear of the roof. Can anyone tell me at what point along the lead from the aerial to the ICE there's any kind of signal booster (I daresay there's a proper word for that) as the radio won't deliver a clear signal (sounds like the booster has died or there's a dodgy connection as the sound is covered in white noise).

I just want to know whether the entire roof lining is going to need to come down or whether a little more thought has been applied and there are no joins/connections/widgets anywhere apart from behind the radio (one of those Cabosse Auditorium things) or above the cabin light switches at the front of the roof.

And then runs along the floor to the front of the car and the radio? (rather than running along the roof)

The radio aerial for the Vel Satis is incorporated into the rear window heater element. The fin roof-mounted aerial is for mobile phones. If you have no or very poor reception it may be the aerial amplifier or filter thats faulty - no idea how to get to them though...
