Renault Twingo
Discussion
I'm trying to come to a decision on what car to get next, and hold onto for a few years. I'm currently 18 and will be looking into purchasing on Finance, brand new hopefully.
Obviously, I'm going to look at the Sport/Cup models and I'm currently looking into the spec on the internet and whatever but that isn't first hand experience like I presume a few of you have.
Could you let me know your opinions on them, what I'm to be looking out for if I don't go brand new and what kind of kit I want to be looking at getting on it.
Plus, what actually is the difference between the RenaultSport model and the Cup model?
Thanks in advance,
Adam.

You can get a 182 for £5000, and this Twingo will be what? £11000?
Pretty sure you can afford a few hundred in insurance if you can afford a 11k car! If its because they refuse to insure the car just stick with what you have for another year, it will be worth it
I dont have a car atm haha. Would you recommend getting a severly cheaper car to use for a year before the 182 becomes more of a prospect? Don't buy a new car
I drive an 05 plate clio 182 on 34k miles. My flatmate drives a 59 plate 1.2 twingo that he bought brand new.
I Paid £5800 for my car 2 months after he paid £7k something for his. The running costs of mine inc insurance, lower mpg, tax etc work out around £300 a year more.
Moral of the story is new cars are a waste of money, I would never buy a car less than two years old unless I had just won the euromillions. However I am very thankfull to the bloke who paid £14k for mine in 2005 and lost £1600 a year on depreciation so I could get such a great value for money car
Twingo may well be a good bet for you as your young and you need a low insurance group car etc, but just don't buy a new one!

new cars are a waste of money?! spoken by someone who cant afford one. lets see how much of a waste of money it is when he gets all repairs fixed free of charge under warranty while you have to fork out an arm and a leg when your car starts falling apart around you.I drive an 05 plate clio 182 on 34k miles. I just spotted your occupation, no wonder you are bigging up new cars! But seriously, a clio 182 standard warranty was 3 years long. So do you really think he got value for money by having at least £4800+ of work done in those first 3 years under warranty by Renault? I can tell you the answer is no as I have all the paperwork.
The grand total required for maintenance other than standard servicing is £4 so far for a tub of lith molly and a jubilee clip.

Its only a waste of money if you don't have it.
Everyone should own a brand new car at least once in their lives...anyone who drives new cars, then 3-5 year old cars on a daily basis knows the difference...
Just not when youre 18!
Buy a Twingo GT thata a couple of years old. 100hp and great handling will provide you with enough fun for a year at least!

Yes, but thats a 3 year old French car, probably the equivalent of a 10 year old German car.In my experience brand new french cars are fine but the rattles and problems start after about 6 months.
Good advice people ...
The guy comes on here and asks about a new car purchase, and gets shot down in flames, and barraged into getting a different car.
The Twingo 133 is a fantastic bit of kit, it really is! It's won numerous awards this year, and is a capable little hatch. Sure, it won't be 182 pace, but it wouldn't be far off!
Oh, and it looks superb in White with Black wheels!

If I had a brand new Twingo 133 in front of me, and a 5yr old 182 that is probably due a Cambelt & shocks, and has a steering wheel that has melted like a Cornetto in the Sahara, then the decision would be easy, for me!
Hey ho.

The cost of any repairs wont be anywhere near the depreciation of the new car. Are you saying a brand new car is good value for money?
The depreciation on 197s has been considerably lower than previous gen Clios so far, and they're much better screwed together. Combine the depreciation on your 182 with the maintenance costs and it's probably closer than you think.Having said, that the 197 I have will probably be the only new car I own. I could adopt the same logic as you in my response and suggest that he actually goes and looks at Clio 16v/Williams. Half the cost to buy of a 182, arguably much more fun. Yes there'll be slightly increased maintenance costs again, but again it's all offset by the lower purcahse price and the fact that they've now hit their rock bottom in value so would be unlikely to depreciate.
However, I actually think the Twingo makes an excellent purchase and is far closer to the original ideals of the mk1 Clio and proper hot hatches than anything else at the moment, including the mk2 Clios.
