I was looking for some clips of the Renault Clio 200 and came across this clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IK3wZf9IWVY

Nevermind about the off the Porsche has; the pace of the car that the camera is in is crazy. Is it really a Renault Clio 200 Cup? If it is it looks very impressive.Scarily so.

It does look pretty quick doesnt it? With a passenger in their too.

Judging from his lines, balls and his username on Youtube I guess he's quite the ring regular. In this video he is keeping up with the Ring Taxi, which while the M5 is showboating a bit and gets caught in some traffic, it's still good going.

If Renault could make a nice little coupe with the Clio Cup's performance/handling etc (essentially a new Integra DC2..) then it would defintely be a potential future purchase for me..

You call that a coupe?

Admittedly looks dont bother me that much, but I want something low down and preferably not visually like a bog standard hatch. I was also wanting something of similar weight or less than the Clio..

I thought it sounded pretty standard. Exhaust maybe. Hard to tell on from the camera perhaps.

I can perfectly believe that was a standard-ish Clio 200 in that vid - notice how it does'nt pull 5th too well up the long hill on the back 'straight'. With a decent driver behind the wheel they are quick cars (have you seen Dale wots-its-name in the R26R keeping some full on race cars very honest round there?!). The driver in this vid takes some nice lines (based on my extensive experience on the xbox wink), he is flat through some very quick bends, and the way he holds gears on the limiter suggests to me he knows what he is doing.

Watching that reminded me of my old 172 Cup. Swear I could drive that thing quicker than my Elise! I could just chuck it into bends with such confidence then get straight back on the power. The 197/200 has even more grip for the bends and brakes too.

It is regular 200 cup, as the driver obviously.

It's fairly obvious the Porsche driver can't pedal too quickly or very well or does'nt know where he going wink (All 3 would be my guess)

Sounds pretty standard to me.

The 200 is a cracking little car, and is more than capable of hanging on the coat tails of some expensive machinery!

The best car I have ever owned by a country mile!

so basically you want either an elise or an exige then as there isnt any small coupes that weigh less than a clio with the same handling/performance

Yes I'm well aware of them and I know you're not being 100% serious smile I'd like a drive of one, but I imagine they dont offer much difference to an Elise and probably no quicker than my DC2.

I dont want to divert the thread away from the vid/Clio Cup with my request for a Renault coupe, it just seems they're the only manufacturer doing cheap-ish lightweight specials when before we atleast had Peugeot, Honda and Vauxhall among others. Again as has been mentioned in other threads Homologation rules changing has made a difference aswell.

..Whatever, more Clio 200 comments please!

I know exactly what you mean about a modern DC2. My 200 cup is due for delivery in August to replace my 98 UK DC2. As much as I love my DC2 I can't justify spending as much as I do keeping it in top condition. Getting a new car thats going to depreciate doesnt seem all that sensible either but the deals are so cheap, especially if you don't mind going for the basic cup (coming from the DC2 its an improvement in luxury!). Also going down this route with a warranty means I should be avoiding any large unforeseen expenses as I have had with my DC2 a few times.

I wish someone would make a cheap, lightweight coupe with basic spec but is amazing to drive. If only Honda still did genuine type Rs.

Only problem with ordering a brand new car is the wait! Its torture. Only 8 weeks to go...

We are in exactly the same boat except i'm replacing an MR2 Turbo!

Mine was due next week but has been delayed till september.. and no one can give me a good reason for the delay.

I would have bought an FT-86 or similar if it'd been available. The Clio was the only logical choice for me, even considering cars that are significantly more expensive.

...and yes as others have said the driver in the OP's video appears to know the ring like the back of his hand.

Man thats crap! They must have a good reason for delaying 2 months just before your expected date. I'll not be impressed if my date gets pushed back like that.

Are you selling the MR2 before you get the 200? I'm going to sell the DC2 but don't know if I can survive without a car for very long!

What spec did you go for? I went for 200 cup in racing blue with recaros as the only option.

You should join up on clio197.net if you haven't already, plenty of knowledgable people over there.

Good choice on the Racing Blue and the GT spoiler. I forgot I had that ordered as well! I think I'm in a minority by actually liking the standard wheels.

Apparently there are lots of delays with new cars coming into the country due to type approvals and some government system playing up. Hopefully its sorted soon.

Its impressive driving for sure, but the Porsche driver couldn't, and the M5 wasn't really trying to go for a fast lap. The Clio clearly wouldnt see which way either went if they were driven properly by someone going for a time.
