high milage 172s.....
Discussion
afternoon all
im selling my car and have been offered a 172 as a px, now the current owner does look after his cars and will be serviced etc like clockwork but there are 2 things that concern me.
1. its an 2002 car on 82k, i only do around 12k a year but would hate to get a car on that milage only to find out the engines arent very good at high milage.
2. its been fettled with(exhaust, ind kit and remap, also brakes etc)and its rev limit raised, its been used as a fun car with the odd track day
can the 172s take this kind of abuse or is this one to aviod? im after something that wont let me down
cheers in advance

Sounds OK in principle. OEM exhausts always go on the Clio so most owners get an after-market as its cheaper. What induction kit is it as most of them sap power or are positioned wrong?
I would be wary that its had its limiter increased due to it being pretty pointless unless its being tracked. How are the brakes different as most owners upgrade pads and disks only, not really a need for more powerful brakes.
Check all belts have been done as its 5 years or 70k for the cambelt which is expensive! And make sure engine mounts are good as these are crap.
But Clio's will be good for over 100k miles if they have been maintained correctly and normally loosen up at that milage.

hi thanks for the reply
cambelt etc was all done around 60k, so should be ok for a while not sure on what induction kit it is, i have a feeling it will be an ok one as he has a non chavvy stealth type exhaust after surfing cliosport.net, im sure he did the same for the i/c and it was then mapped to suit
glad to hear these engines are good for high milage then if i like it i will keep it
im just concerned about the rev limiter, or can these engines take it?

Engine should be fine.
I'd be more concerned about the gearbox. Mine went (failed bearing due to oil leak) around that milage and a friend of mine has had to replace his on slightly higher milage (similar failure I believe). Both had been used 'with enthusiasm' but not abused (mine certainly not in my ownership; 3yr 40k mile).
Only really bad thing to go wrong on mine though. Was very reliable apart from that. Replaced exhaust back box early on but that is practically a consumable on a 172.

hi john
if the gearbox goes it goes, just one of those things really and it seems to be a weak point on this car so i leave a few £££ aside
on the plus side the 2 of my mates know current owner, he has had it 3 years and put around 50k on it and its been very reliable and has had the servicing etc done on time, no expense spared etc and 1 of my mates had it for a while and fitted new suspension. hes informed me that it is one of the 'good ones' and has no hidden suprises
looks like im going from a german mile muncher to a nutty french hatch

Fair enough. I looked after mine very well with regards to servicing and oil changes etc. If I hadn't of had the gearbox problem I would still have been raving about the reliability and bang for buck provided by these cars. Really did enjoy owning mine and would consider another as a run about in the future, but am slightly wary of another big bill like that now.if the gearbox goes it goes, just one of those things really and it seems to be a weak point on this car so i leave a few £££ aside

Hmm the gearbox on my 182 was almost like brand new when I sold it (75k) I also know someone who is on the 100k+
miles on their 182 and it goes to the ring every year and has done since new now 6 years old.
It's very much hit and miss but personally I'd buy with my ears and feeling through the gearstick.

Mine felt and sounded fine one day. Then the next was going click, click, click. Noise progressively got worse over a couple of weeks but the operation never suffered.
This did start the day after a 750 mile lap of Scotland however
