Anyone here rate the basic versions of the 206? Can't really understand why it doesn't get more love for its handling.

It's not quite as stable as the 306 and feels a bit narrow but it does feel a fair bit stiffer and rather rear-led on turn-in. Can be really pushed and is pretty faithful in the dry. Has a lot of feel and the suspension deals with the road just like the 306. Additionally it's newer, safer and has more kit. I have had one for 3 years, and it's only an early 8 valve 1.6 GLX but I do honestly really rate it. Have not tried the GTi versions but understand they may conform to the laws of diminishing returns and are not that great. But the basic models are a different matter and I would put far above the basic Clio or most of its peers. Only the KA in my fair experience has seemed to handle equally nicely (a great car).
