Is it just me or have the prices started creeping up for the 205. We all know they've been calling it a "future classic" for a while now, but has it started to become as such. I remember looking a couple of years ago and bought a very good black 1.6 with no dents, not a great amount of history but recent work done good interior and 86k for £850....now that would hardly seem to buy me one of either similar condition or mileage.

Im not complaining though since my Miami 1.9 is in great condition anyway and not looking to buy or sell, just something I think I've noticed.

What say you?

fingers crossed your right.

The other half has a 205 CTI and the prices of 'em never seem great. It's about time they did go up a bit.

My agreed value on my 1.9 has gone from £1200 when I first had it to £2000 now. OK, so I have done a few things to it, but very little cosmetically, which is what the insurance company generally look at in my experience.

Hopefully parts prices won't start creeping up though, I'm getting through alternators like they're going out of fashion, and I need a new bonnet and tailgate at some point too...

yea im also going through alternators too atm. Also just went to buy a rear wheel bearing for the 1.9 only to be told i needed to buy the full hub assembly, not wanting to be ripped off i rang round a few places and they said the same thing. So was almost £50 for that.

My last one was agreed at £3600.
I've seen ones advertised for sale recently at £4995 and £5995....

They'll never be worth much, not compared to MK1/2 Escorts for example.

They made millions of them and they don't rust. So there are still thousands left and there probably will always be more available than there will be demand for them.

Add the fact that you could buy a shell and rebuild the whole car for £5k, I can't see prices ever being high, even for minty low-mileage versions. Some of the specials like the TT's may fetch more but only if they were original and low mileage (fat chance!).

They are cheap and disposable, which is why everyone loves 'em.

you could say that about golf gti's
starting to fetch silly prices, admittedly not in the escort range but going up weekly it seems

Considering there are currently 3 on here that arn't what I would call "showroom" condition low mileage ones above the £5k mark, plus the ones on the likes of the just GTi's site, I would beg to differ that they are never going to be expensive cars. Especially with all the hybrid/ electro cars coming in and the Gov't pledge of some studpidly high % of new cars to be elecric powered only by 2020. Small, light and nible cars with a bit of pedegree could well start fetching large prices.

Plus the 205's still have their own rally classes that are as popular as ever so the demand is still pretty high. Though it will be a long time before they reach escort prices...maybe when they are alowed into historic rallies yum

As my current insurers have told me - prices from Just GTIs don't count!

Golfs rot. They were also more expensive to buy than 205's and have always been more expensive, like for like, year for year, in the secondhand market.

i do not want to argue with anyone but whilst the 205's are great cars tyhey never had the cult following of the vw's. which i think has an effect on prices. i had 3 mk11 golf gti's and i will have another one day just as a weekend car

they may not have quite the same size of cult...but one of the main points going for the 205...was its better than the golf. Not trying to start an arguement, but that is still one of its greatest asset when it comes to what classic (ish) hot hatch you want to buy.

it is just a matter of time before decent examples of either car will be silly money

I think the prices of 205's will inevitably rise, but not to silly amounts because of how many were made.

The low milers with FSH, few owners, and original panel fetch a premium, i've seen some around the £4-£5k mark that havn't been from Just GTIS. Obviously the rarer examples like dimma's, TT's, and 1FM's will always hold the money too. I also think the phase 1's will become more saught after in the future. Are they a worthy investment? probably not, but thats not what the 205 is about, cheap fun is the way forward smile

if you think about it, mk 1 escorts have 15 years more life than the earliest 205/309 gti

so my opinion is that, in 10 - 15 years time prices should of rocketed woohoo

my restored 309 gti is 22 years old this year, and i plan on hanging onto it for quite some time.

They'll be 10 times as many 205/309's left though, compared to Escorts, due to tin-worm

The other point that made the escorts leap in price was their admitance to the classic rallies too was it not?
