Hi everyone, im currently 16 and hoping to be driving this year, which means iv started the hunt for my first car. One of my thoughts is to buy a standard mk3 or mk2 Clio and convert it into a V6 replica smile
Has anyone got any advise for me on this? It would be much appreciated!
Other first car suggestions are welcome as well biggrin

Thanks,
Tom

Your insurance man might have something to say about your plans.

IMHO but a sensible car and keep it standard until you have some NCD/

...very few replica's are cool.

All show and no go, is best left for idiots.

Buy a sensible car, run it for 2 years and get used to hitting curbs. Then when you're 19, buy something 1.6 or upwards and appreciate it, without curbing alloys.

If you can cope with the stigma attached, then try a Ford Ka.

1.3 engine, wheel at each corner, so handles like a roller skate, cheap insurance, great fun! It's the replacement for the old Mini.

Can be had cheap enough, and plenty of them about to choose from. Watch out for rust, and try to find a post 02 car (I think) that has the newer engine, not the old 50's designed pushrod one. Much quieter and smoother. (Comparatively, anyway!)

Don't go for the obvious.

Saxos, Clios and Corsas are VERY expensive to insure, because they are generally bought by idiots and crashed.

How about a Land Rover?

this is ture, as my first car was a vtr and my insurance was 2500eek and i was an idiot to pay it so be warned, on the other hand it was a fun car to drive thats why i got a vts now as i can afford the insurance, 650 a year 4 NCB so its worth waiting to get your NCB, but i mite be selling it soon

Thanks for all the feed back everyone!

I am trying to avoid going form the norm first cars not only because they are ridiculously expensive to insure but I also want a car that is unique for a first car, not the usual pug 106, corsa....etc, to reflect my passion for cars. Some of my other thoughts were maybe a renault 5 or a nova. However these cars are hard to find without them being modified or thrashed by boy racers.

I have also heard that there is a car insurance company that do young drivers classic car insurance. The cars must not have over a 1.3 engine I think (maybe 1.4) and must be pre 1990. So mk1 golf maybe?

Any more suggestions would be great!!!

Thanks again everyone,
Tom

Don't buy a Clio and make it into a V6 replica it will only cost you loads of money and you wont get it back when you sell.

I waited till 25 to get my Clio and it was worth the wait.

FWIW I had a Polo mk4 1.3 for my first car which I think was a good, maybe worth looking at.

I think if I was looking for a first car I'd think about MK1 1.1 golfs, not fast but quite cool and cheap to maintain.

I wouldn't consider building a replica V6 to do the job properly and to a high enough standard to ever sell you'd spend an absolute fortune

My first car was a Mazda 323F that wasn't to bad for insurance. Was a good car too, my favourite thing about it was the pop up headlights smile

Seems to be an ever-increasing choice. I wouldn't be surprised if insurance becomes steep for young drivers on these before long. Also, in a few years, there'll be no un-modified ones available!

(I'm not disagreeing with you, by the way. I think it's a good idea, and one that may not be available for long!)

I would agree that generally, replicas are a bad idea (especially ones which require a lot of custom work - ie a clio V6 replica, as this can get expensive, and quite often end up looking pap), however I do think that having a base model, then sticking some higher spec bumpers / arches / whatnot can be a great way of making your cheap, 1.1 look a fair bit nicer.

For example - my first car was a Renault 5 Campus 1.4 with a full GT Turbo bodykit and interior. If you're handy with a spanner and do it all yourself, you could do it all for under £1k (including the car).

Please do not buy a V6 Replica!! There has only ever been one good rep and it was done using real RS parts and it ended up costing more than a real V6...Fanny!

Most replicas normally look pants to start with but Id say the biggest issue with replicating a clio V6 would be the 3.0 V6 that will look like a shabby set of back seats.

I paid 1500 for my insurance on my 106 GTi so your right in not getting a car like that.

As above get the range rover! tank
