Peugeot 206 GTI
Discussion
Afternoon all,
Will be going with the other half over the next week or so to have a look at a few of these, seem to get a 2002 ish car with some 70k for around £2000, so decent amount of car for the cash but as always I'm after a bit of a heads up of bits to look out for and any bits of information that may be useful to her.
Thanks,
R

The OH finally managed to get rid of her 206GTI late last year, it was shocking. The dash display broke repeatedly and if i drove it my leg would cramp because i have feet, and if you are unfortunate enough to have feet then there will be no room for them near the pedals.
Seriously avoid. Please.
Or when she buys it explain that you will never need to drive it, ever!

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with a 172, she just doesn't want another renault, I'd be happy with a one myself but hey it's not my money. She likes the look of the 206 and wants something with a bit of go in it, so I'm just trying to find out if there's anything specific to look out for, engine, gear box, dash (already mentioned and thanks for that) etc when going to look. Ultimayley she'd like a mk4 (gti) or 5 (with a good bit of spec) golf both are a little out of budget, but the 206 looks on paper to have a decent spec and some poke and at a fairly low price, as mentioned earlier for about 2K it looks like you can get a reasonable one.
Cheers

Your mrs is wanting to buy a car on it's looks rather than it's abilities. If she likes the way it looks then go for a 206 GTi. Just don't expect it to be anything other than thoroughly st.
So your saying...Engine - unreliable
Gear box - will break
Elecs - will break
Bodywork - rust
Running gear - will break
???
These are the things I'm trying to find out. She's not in to enthusiastic driving person and lets be honest the majority of people will buy a car not just on how it drives, looks are important. I just need to know that if she gets one will it be a reliable car for her and what to look out for when viewing (over and over all the usual damp, smoke, knocks and noises).
If I've understood your request correctly she wants a car that in her opinion looks nice and also something that "has a bit of go". If she was purely in the market for looks, and she likes the 206, then I would say go for it. She wants a bit of go though, which suggests to me that she's the type that may be disappointed with the inability of the Pug to deliver.
As previous posters have said I would avoid the 206 GTi as it is a flawed warm hatch. The only experience I have had of the 206 range was the (new) one that I learnt to drive in. The driving position was flawed, the build quality was fairly shoddy (standard for french though), and generally it was a bit of a manky place to be. I can't even say I 'got' the looks. All in all not a great place to pass the miles.
If she likes VWs has she considered the old shapes Polo GTi/Lupo GTi.

Cheers for that.
She currently has a 1.2 16v clio so would suspect she'd find most things a little quicker in comparison.
In summary then...
Build is typically french (so similar to her clio which is crap, not saying thats true of all but her's is poor to me)
Driving position is not best
Luke warm instead of hot hatch
Elecs can / will be problematic
Get a VW GTI if budget could be stretched

At the risk of going against the wave of negativatey (sp) that plagues these forums . .
Get what you want, if everyone bought Golf GTi's the world would be a cr@p place.
Its not the quickest car in the world but neither is a 172 or Golf Gti.
Personal opion is what makes us individual, My experience of VAG is rubbish £3.5k of warranty work in a 1 year old Ibiza.
She likes it, tell her to get it, you olny live once. Good Luck

not if its a mk4 gti, i can only see the pug being more reliable.http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... vr6 golf&mid=187114
I think there are a few sour apples in here on the whole, based on the fact the 206 was a bit of a poor show for Peugeot compared with previous GTi efforts and it was the first car where Peugeot started to lose their way. Compared to a Clio 1.2 it will obviously be better though and who's slating the driving position, then telling the OP to get a 172!? The pedals AND steering wheel are left-set in those! Not knocking the 172, it's a cracking car! But it's flawed, like all great French pocket rockets.
Back on topic, the EW10 engine isn't great, but it's not ste either. Same can be said of the gearbox....not the nicest to use, but not a money pit. They're not rapid although compared with said Clio they'll feel it.
I think they look alright in that burnt orange colour too. And Nimrod alloys are usually a favored in house mod for the Pug boys.
Check the rear axle, same as the normal Cit/Pug torsion bar layout. If the wheels toe in excessively, the radius arm bearings are shafted. They can be replaced, but it's more cost effective usually to just swap for another axle. At the front they like to eat ball joints and wishbone bushes, but these aren't pricey (just a faff to get the right ones based on the RP changes)
Electrics can be iffy, but any issues will be obvious if you flick EVERY switch (at the same time too)
Interior typically 90's low-end PSA spec, but then a Clio is hardly an Aston so again I can't imagine she'd hate it. You do sit a bit high though IMO.
Personally I know people who are more than happy with them. Not my cuppa in honesty, but I would think she'd probably like it. For £2k I think one might represent good value. A good 172 will cost more than that and they're not as refined on the daily commutes.
