Hi there!
Havent really been on the forum much but I've only owned a 1.2 clio...so it was nothing to shout about! smile

But now Ive purchased a Clio 182, will be going to pick it up as soon as I get my policy cert through email. Its a Black 04 completely standard 182...so noones messed around with it, apart from a very nice radio with ipod leads! Its done 53k and purchased it for 4500. Does that sound like a good price? It was up for 5000 but I haggled :P Obviously the first thing i want to do is tune it a bit, new exhaust, air intake and probably some springs. I was wondering what the best makes are? Was thinking of a milltek exhaust, but im new to all this..so any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers!
Dan

Good choice! I've just bought a Clio 182 Trophy, only picked it up yesterday! I was looking for a full fat (FF)182 but with the Cup packs, but ended up stretching the budget and going for a locally advertised Trophy. I love it, so much fun, and really likes being revved.

Coming from a Seat Leon TDi 170 FR, this is a very different car to drive. I've got to re-learn petrol driving again, after 5 yrs of diesel!

Not sure if I'm allowed to plug other forums here, but get yourself registered on cliosport.net and cliotrophy.co.uk as both have lots of advice. (Obviously the cliotrophy one is more orientated towards trophies, but there is a section for other Clios.

I test drove a FF182 with Cup packs that had the Milltek exhaust, which sounded good. My Trophy has a Yozzasport, which isn't quiet at all, I love the sound of it, but I'm not sure my neighbours will be impressed when I leave for work at 6am every day!

Seems like good value that, has it had the cambelt and aux belts changed? They should be done at 5 years or 80k(I think?) for the Cambelt, and 36k for the aux belt. If not, you can get it done for about 300-350 at a specialist. (Or £800odd at Renault!)

Happy motoring!

Welcome!

I myself only have a 1.2 Clio, so know the feeling.

Regarding modifications, I'd personally advise against it. Renault spent a lot of money researching the cars and whilst there are some excellent track modified examples of 172/182's out there, the standard car itself is perfectly balanced, has plenty of torque and the brakes are spot on.

If your exhaust does get a hole in it, then perhaps seek an aftermarket Tuned system. But otherwise save your money and maintain the girl perfectly, with a professional detailer (unless you're keen at it yourself) and just general maintenance.

All my opinion, I work for Renault and when a mint, clean standard RS comes in it's always nice. The lowered ones seem to always be prone to knocking out their bottom ball joints and the ones with exhausts can suffer with failing on an MOT's emissions.

Anyway - Get some pics up. The price sounds about right, well done for haggling =)

Edit: The timing belt should be changed 5 years, or 72k miles to correct the guy above. And the annoying neighbours issue he raises is very valid - if someone had a noisy car that didn't have to be noisy (the 172/182 only has a rep-mobile engine, not a v12) I'd get miffed if they left at 6am every morning wink

Cheers lads for the info, just drove it back today have to say its a sexy little beast! Only one problem though was coming back home got behind an Audi and it threw up some gravel and I now have two little pings in the top of the windscreen, you cant really see them but I want them removed! frown A Trophy niiice m8! I live in rural Wales so I don't really have to worry about waking neighbours, lol the joys of living in the country! Yeah I dont want to change it much but I did floor it a bit on the way back and noticed a bit of a roll round corners so hopefully tighter springs should help and slightly lower, don't want it dead low just a teeeny weeny bit lower! biggrin And I know a mechanic, so Im getting him to change all the belts on it and get him to give it a once over, its just come out of mot so should hopefully *fingers crossed* be ok!!

Just had a big fright a few seconds ago, we got a Tescos delivery reverseing up the drive, if my dad hadn't been out there the guy would have smashed into my car and I would have murdered the driver! biggrin He was less than 6 inches from the car!!!!!

Oh yeah and I'll try to get some pics up asap, and you should put some up of your Trophy! I know what you mean about learning a new driving style, I am too...I'm not used to having power and such good brakes! biggrin

...if you erradicate all of your bodyroll, you'll have no grip wink

Go-Karts can get away with zero suspension, because they weigh very little and their axle's tortional properties replicate firm diff's and their chassis replicate suspension!

172/182's benefit from some body-roll; this comes from tyre sidewalls, geometry of the suspension and the body itself. Without that, the patter you experience on everyday roads would cripple your tyres contact with the road!

If your mechanic friend does end up doing the cambelt, tell him not to bother unless he replaces the tentioner, the idler (held on by an awkward to get to T50 bolt...or is it a T40? I have the special tool so forget!) and the whole auxiliary belt kit, including idler pulleys and tentionsers. As said on other topics, I've never seen a Renault cambelt fail, unless an idler/tentioner has failed first, or an aux. belt has failed and injested itself in the timing system!

Thanks for setting me straight GTP rpm, I knew it was around that mark. As I was looking at lower mileage than that, I was focussing on the 5 year point.

I agree about the exhaust, if the standard one is OK, keep it until it rusts through or falls off! At £800ish for a Renault mild steel replacement, a stainless steel aftermarket one is a no-brainer, but read up on them first, as they seem to vary a lot in noise and build quality.

I'll try to get some photos up soon - I've got several photos taken by the previous owner, but I'll take some of my own and post them.

Nice one, looks tidy!

Keep away from those kerbs, with those wheels - impossible to hide scuff marks!

Oh and, turn your fog lights off - it's not foggy wink

Congrats on the purchase.
You'll soon get used to throwing it around corners alot faster than you'd normally go.

I own a Clio 172 Phase 1. Its a real hoot to drive. I've just put Brembo high carbon front discs on the car with Ferodo DS2500 pads and EBC Greenstuff rear pads.
The engine is standard but has a cone filter instead of the standard airbox. I've done 8 track days in the last 18 months in it and its never given any hint of trouble apart from a recent glitch when a wire broke down from the serial port into the ecu.
The trophy cars had Eibach dampers instead of the standard suspension.

The 182 Trophy's come equipped with Sachs dampers. PITA to rebuild, specialist rebuild for the pair are around £550. Not cheap!

Hate these threads, they always make me want to sack off the GTI and get one of these instead!

A while back someone wanted to do a straight swap, I was in ruins debating it - couldnt sleep for a week! Brilliant cars

Recently purchased a 172 and think there great little cars, think the handling is superb as standard and i really think it's set up perfectly as it is for road use. Would say a nice subtle sounding stainless exhaust would be nice but other than that they are great cars straight out of the box in my opinion.

I replaced the standard exhaust with a Janspeed stainless one with slightly larger pipes and it is a little louder but not much. Cost about £400 rather than £700 for a Renault one made of cheese.
