1997 driveshaft/gearbox problem?

Mate just bought an old Renault Megane.Was making a rumbling noise,guy said it was a gearbox problem.Car goes through all the gears fine including reverse.He jacked the front of the car up today,put it in gear and only one wheel turns,but if you hold the spinning wheel still,the opposite wheel turns??Anyone any ideas?Thanks.
