Clio bonnets 'flying open'!
Discussion
I vaguely remember a story about this in the news a while ago, but the wifes friend has just had the bonnet on her S reg' 1998 Clio fly open whilst driving at 60mph on the M61!!!! She managed to safely find her way onto the hard shoulder by peering through the gaps.
Now the thing is, I thought Clio bonnets opened 'backwards' - or was this just the earlier models???
... anyway, would she still have any course of action with Renault as I believe they were subject to a recall or does she just have to take it on the chin??? I suppose there's only so much Renault can do to get people to take their cars in once they fall out of the network.

Memory is failing on this one but was it not a change to the service schedule as opposed to a recall. So that the bonnet release was greased during serivce. Our phase 2 Clio had a 2 stage bonnet release but I know they still suffered problems so I just kept it well lubed.
Glad to hear nobody was hurt. Could have been nasty.

A friend a few years ago and another a few months ago have had this.
I think it made dogwatch too.
Renault will only cough if its been in for regular dealer service as the dealers will supposedly have fixed FOC while you werent looking.
If its outside the network tough
Which doesnt sound good enough to me
If its faulty it needs fixing
I'd like to see Toyota get away with that one

That's bks, I first received a letter from Renault in 2007 saying to contact a dealer if I had any concerns and they would check it. Last year there was a full recall and my car was done. My car has never seen a Renault dealers from when I bought it in 2006 until it went in for the recall. If its outside the network tough

There was a recall on some Clios, mine (2004 model) was done last summer. They fit a new catch and safety clip.
Mine is also a 2004 and sometimes the bonnet catch does come loose. Luckily I've always noticed straight away and been able to pull over!Parkers said:
Renault claims that the problem is a result of improper maintenance from customers and that it has found no fault in the design or construction of the mechanism. The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) agrees.
Parkers said:
But the customer manual for Clio models built between 1998 and 2005 didn’t contain any information that such maintenance should be carried out and owners received an amendment to their driver manuals in their latest letter from Renault reminding them how to maintain the mechanism and shut the bonnet safety catch correctly.

VOSA said: “VOSA engineers in conjunction with Renault, carried out a thorough investigation into reports of inadvertent bonnet openings of Renault Clio Mk2 and Clio Campus models.
“This investigation found there was no design or construction defect with the bonnet latching mechanism. Instead it was determined that inadequate maintenance – through lack of cleaning and lubrication could lead to the latching mechanism failing to operate correctly.”
Strange how no other cars seem to have the same issue, no matter how old. “This investigation found there was no design or construction defect with the bonnet latching mechanism. Nothing to do with design

I noticed the under the bonnet release stiff (ish) on my 2002 V6 Clio. Easy to sort by lubricating the mechanism with motorcycle chain lube. Basically the problem is when you pull the tab to physically open the bonnet it pulls forward but doesn't always return, hence why the bonnet could lift at speed.
