Can anyone tell me if the rear axle was a weak point on the 206gti on a 2000 plate.
Cheers

No idea on 206 but on most other Pug hatches the axles fail at some point in their life, usually between 80-120,000 miles.

On 106s the axles are all interchangeable between models, assuming same type of brakes. The only difference is the thickness of mounting bolts and the thickness of the torsion bars themselves, which varies between base spec and sportier models.

Torsion bars rarely break so you should be able to swap the ones from your GTI beam into whatever other axle you find.

This is all based on my knowledge of 106s so take it as you wish.

A common problem on all psa rear axles,if you can find one the easiest option is a secondhand unit and just swap it all over (about 3hours).The best option would be a recon unit ,last time i loooked they were about £425 and then about 5hrs to fit stub axles abs sensor carrier and all the braking system. If you go down this route a good tip is to make a drift to drive the stub axles out of the rear hubs and the rear arm ,that way the bearings stay together.
good luck
