Hi

Got a few questions about this, hopefully someone has changed their radio for an aftermarket head unit. I found out I don't need any additional adaptors or fascias (or so halfords say), and I'm putting a Sony one in. Don't worry, no massive subs or anything - just want the ipod connectivity of the Sony wink I already have this so I'm not interested in spending more money on one of those FM things.

I know I need some release keys to get the standard one out, but I can only find ones made for the mk2 clio on ebay, will they work? I also have no idea if they will work, can I trust these not to get stuck or wreck the clips inside? (I want to be able to put it back in if I ever sell it so it's standard).

Also the standard radio has no screen on the unit itself, it is displayed on the top/middle of the dash, will this cause problems with the new head unit in any way?

I use the stalk coming off the steering column to control the radio at the moment, will this work on the new head unit?

Oh sorry one more question. I presume this won't affect the operation of the car alarm in any way? I say this because in my old fiesta the alarm was part of the radio.

Sorry for the long post, just don't want to screw anything up. Cheers.

Hi,

The 172 is a mk2 Clio, so this should be fine. They have 2 holes on either side and you just slide the keys in, pull outwards and towards you and hey presto! She slides out...

You will more than likely need to buy an adapter kit, for a Sony > Renault fitment. Halfords should be able to sort you out with this for an OK price. This will mean when you want to re-install the standard HU, you can without having to mess about with the wiring.

The display will not be affected on your aftermarket radio. Also, depending on how new / upto date your new HU is, you may be able to buy an adapter for the hand control behind the steering wheel too.*

Changing the HU will not affect your alarm.

  • I'm not an ICE expert btw. But hope this helps.

Ah yes I forget that the mk2 had two phases, mine is a mk2 phase 2 then. Hmm, I looked at the book in halfords and it said no cables required to fit any head units confused

I think I'll get the removal keys, take out the standard one and try to fit the Sony HU without an adaptor. Then I can get one if I need it.

Thinking about it, I suppose the head unit would have to support external controls from the steering wheel. It will be interesting to see if it works without any mods scratchchin

Thanks of the reply.

Edit: Oh forgot to add that I have a cable adaptor here from my old Fiesta. I could get lucky and that might fit if the standard wires don't.

As suprised as you maybe Renault list info for changing the headunit in the owners manual, I think it's a French thing cos in the peugeot manuals I have looked in they show it as well, also Sony do specific Renault head units so the display and steering wheel controls will work

You dont need the release keys, you can fashion your own out of a old wire coat hanger or anything thats small enough to poke in the holes just so it pushes the metal clip to the side.
