I'm trying to do the fluid and filters on my GFs 04 1.2 Clio. But I cant seem to find the drain plug for the coolant system.

I'm guessing I'll need to take off the bottom hose but before I do I want to make sure there isnt a plug hiding in some obscure 'only the french would think to put it there' place.

TIA
Stuart

Nope, they don't have drain holes.

Invest in some of those nice cable, hose clip pliers. They're great and save a lot of cursing, trust me!

Once youve drained it and made a savage mess all over the subframe and the floor, put the hose back on trying to get the clip back in the same place. Also, they can be quite difficult to bleed. It's not like with Honda's, or Toyota's where you just top it up and let it idle, revving it to chase the air out, these renaults have at least 2 bleed screws.

One will be on the side of the thermostat housing, which should be a 10mm bolt - and also a plastic screw on one of the pipes, just before it goes through the fire-trap to the matrix. Fill the coolant bottle up, then undo the 10mm bolt...the level will drop down and keep topping it right up until it spurts a constant flow of coolant out of there. Do it back up, then do the same for the other bleed plug on the heater pipe. Then let it run up until the fan cuts in twice and re-check the coolant level and that should be job done smile

P.s. if it's 04 plate check if it's had it's timing belt replaced. If it hasn't, chances are the water pump may be weeping. So you could always do the timing belt and change the waterpump, which would save you changing the coolant twice wink

Thanks for the reply.

Typical french. Make everything difficult.

I had a lot of trouble getting the bottom hose off yesterday, to the point that I gave up and had a beer.

AFAIK the timing belt hasnt been done, and the car hit 70000miles yesterday. How difficult is the timing belt on a clio?

TIA
Stuart.

On the D4F 1.2 petrol, it's about as easy as they come.

If you're local, I'll be able to help you out. If not, I could get the repair manual for you.

The hardest part is getting the bottom pulley bolt un-done. Also, if it's got Air Conditioning then the belt that drives that, has a fiddly tentioner.
