How much for a resistor?

One of the speed settings on our Renault Scenic has stoped working. They suspect a faulty resisitor.
Guess how much it will cost to fix?

Probably going to be a resistor pack and modified wiring. Overloaded terminals and burnt out. Easy repair, instrument panel surround off, enter gynacologist mode, fit new resistor, solder wiring connector block etc. 1 Hours labour, parts and vat, £150-£200 tops.Guess how much it will cost to fix?

It's our second Scenic, it can;t seem to go near the garage without costing at least £800.
There is a long list of other parts it needs - front steering arms, gearbox mounting etc. They want to charge £75 for tracking and £150 for coolant (by which I assume they mean water and anti-freeze). The total, including a service and the resistor is nearly £2,000.
That's their 'estimate'.
This isn't an old car, it's a 56 plate and done about 40k miles.
I tried to call Renault complaints department yesterday but the DECT phone went flat after 30 mins of being on hold. They put in an urgent message for someone to call me but no-one did.

The resistors burning out is a common problem. It's not a £545 job I assure you. The resistor and wiring kit shouldn't cost a lot and it takes about 30minutes to do a good job. (I've done about 20 myself).
As for wear on the inner steering arms (Axial balljoints) this is a grey area in my opinion. Having slight play in these, will be completely un-noticeable on the UK roads. If they have excessive wear and are dangerous (very uncommon) then unless there is obvious damage to wheels or other suspension components, I would deem that as a product not up to standard.
Coolant is due on the 4th year (coolant is now used instead of a water/anti-freeze mix as it acts as a lubricant). If you will be keeping the vehicle past 5 years then your cambelt will need changing (5years / 72k miles). I'd hold on the coolant change until then, because depending on the engine a weeping water pump can be very common and they'll want to charge you again for replacing the coolant!
If you're local and ever want a second opinion, give us a shout on here or by email. I'm in Bucks
(good luck with the warranty angle).
