hi all

i have been having an on going issue with my other halfs clio since before christmas.

The shocks were leaking real bad so i decided to change the shocks, topmounts bearings and brakes whilst i was at it

swap went well but always had a weird noise coming from the front drivers side.

so thought it may be the difference in 35 or 41mm top mounts so re ordered new mounts and changed them this weekend.

passenger side piece of cake put stut back in and it is tight in there no movement or noise the spring also compressed easily.

the drivers side is a different matter, spring was a paint to clamp as it seams lop sided to one side so was harder to compress enough. changed the top mount put in place and did up but when i put the wheel on with the car jacked up i could pull down the suspensn andpush up ect making it move.

the missus drove it to work this week and says there is still a noise so tonight i took it off and cant seam to think what may be the issue i put it all back together (getting super quick at suspension on this now!)

but i need to know what to do?

is it the spring shot and therefore not pushing up enough?

as an insight the shocks that came off the car that were shot were proper shot as soon as i took off the top nut the shaft diserpeared into the shock for good would this have effected the spring?

please help as im going nuts taking the car to bits and want to eventually start work on my own!!!!

Cheers

Knocking noises from the front on Clio's in my experience, has nearly always been bottom ball joints, or more common, anti-roll bar drop-links. The Bottom ball joints are quite common, a lever applied between the stub axle and the lower arm to test for movement is a good indication, that or grab the wheel with that corner raised and try to take up any free-play from left to right.

The anti-roll bar drop-links are prone to perishing, causing them to turn soft rubber into solid rubber (almost plastic) and thus fracture. Make sure you check these out while you're at it.

I'll be honest, 1/2 of the Clio's I service have some form up suspension movement when totally in the air when grabbing the wheel at the top and the bottom. This is not an issue.

Springs will either be OK, or broken too. If there are no fractures on the springs, they are ok. Just make sure you have it resting correctly in the top and bottom cups, as if they are not this could also produce a sound when going over bumps or, turning on the spot.

If you live locally to Buckinghamshire, give us a shout @ djayrpm@aol.com. If not, post back in here.
