Hi all,

Just sold the BMW trackcar and have seen a 1.8 16V track car that, on the face of it, looks great. But I have never driven one, so I just wondered how quick they are?

I remember having a "duel" with a 182 in a 911 and was amazed how well it did. I know the 1.8 wont be the same, but are they good enough for a giggle?

Thanks all.

The mk1 Clio is, imo, the most fun of the 3. I was always more of a fan of the 1.8 than the Williams and had 2 (just sold my last one frown ) And my 197 is 100 times more capable but 100x less fun

The 1.8 has to be revved, preferably from 3.5k and up and has a 7200/7500 redline. It is one of the finest sounding 4-pots ever made imo. Best mods are a decat and a half decent backbox and leave it at that. Eventually I found my preferred setup was a pair of Paradas on the front and a pair of Firestone Fuelsavers on the back. It left enough rear end movement and killed power-understeer dead.

It kept with rather a lot of stuff on track and whilst it might have not quite had the legs on the straight bits it more than makes up for it in the corners. I lapped quite consistently with an E30 M3 round Cadwell and I know the driver can hustle a car. I lost out in power on the back straight after a couple of laps. Through the corners it just made it all back.

It's in its element being thrown through switchbacks and tight courses. And as a final insight into its capabilities a few of us mk1 Clio owners did a sprint day at Haynes and of 11 cars mine was joint 5th, beaten by a stripped and cammed willy engined one, a rally clio with short ratio box, a cammed williams and a normal williams. Think I was just 0.4s behind the front runner.

A few pics for you:

And proof to any naysayers that you can lean on Paradas in the wet:

Love those turbine style alloys. I've never driven a Mk1 Clio but from I've seen they are very nimble on track and even more willing to cock a rear wheel than the Mk2. Yes, they have a bit less poke in a straight line but not a massive amount.

For what the 1.8 lacks in power is more than made up for by it's chuckability & how much it will make you laugh when thrashing it about. I'm pretty confident you'll thoroughly enjoy it whatever you do with it

Which reminds me, I must get mine on track at some point this year
