Hi everyone. Bought a GTi-6 last night. Red. 90k miles. Seems a pretty good buy!

I have bought it as a second car and it's main use will be to take me to trackdays throughout this year and possibly some sprints and hillclimbs later on.

Might end up letting my girlfriend drive it day to day aswell so its not just sat in the garage.

However, first i just want to make sure everything is mechanically sound.

I have been reading through the service history which seems pretty comprehensive. However, the cam belt hasnt been done for 5 years and 40k miles!!!! - i think i read this should have been done every 3 years or 36k?!?!?

So that is going to get done. Oil and fuel filters etc seem to have been replaced regularily. Any suggestions for things that should be checked replaced as a matter of course? obviously will get the water pump done at the same time as the cam belt.

Going forward any recommendations to improve it on the track? so far just thinking better tyres and then suspension when i can afford it. are there any build threads on here showing stripped out and track prepped 306's?

Cheers!

Danny

Change the belt immediately, the service intervals were very wrong in the book.

A mate of mine has one with 250,000 miles on the clock as a daily hack. He uses it also in the standard class at his local hill climb too.
Still goes really rather well.

Cheers for the info and the quick replies! Im in West Yorkshire so no good in Leics, cheers though. How much do you think I should look to pay in total for cam belt, water pump etc?

Bearing in mind the fact that I want to get it track ready but also want to remain eligable for standard road going classes should I do any hill climbs im thinking of doing the following: -

Brakes - Dot 5 fluid and braided lines. (disks and pads seem fine so far)
Tyres - better tyres that meet the 1a list - thinking Toyo r1-r's

Wheels - possibly get lighter wider wheels?
Suspension - possibly improve - v expensive though!
Interior - possibly get som lighter racing seats.

I've put possibly for these last three as im not sure whether they would affect the class i'd be in if i did any hillclimbs / sprints. Mainly just want to get a feel for track days first though. Ultimately i'd like it fully stripped out but I'll have to see which direction i go in.

Any advice on oil / water? The heater has been replaced and not sure if its OEM, but you only seem to be able to see how much water is in there by taking the cap off and looking in. Is there any way to check coolant / water mix or is it best to just drain and refill? Is this easy enough to do yourself? I'm trying to learn to do as much stuff myself.

Cheers.

hi - cheers for all the replies. yes i am now also on the 306 forum aswell.

I have got it booked in for the cambelt this weekend - they are doing the job lot - belt, pullies, tensioners, and the water pump etc.

Few questions - is it worth doing anything else whilst those jobs are done? i thought maybe replacing the engine mounts might be easier then? prob no difference though.

I havn't had chance to look at the state of the current discs or pads but from what i have read i feel the way forward if i need to replace anything is brembo disks (don't want to shell out on calipers yet), and Ferrodo DS2500 pads. Any suggestions on that?

I am going to fit braided brake lines all round and 5.1 fluid. IS this the best bet for track and road use? or would you go for something like Motul RBF600 - which doesnt look to be 5.1 but ive heard good stuff about? the main aim is something that is good on track, not too hardcore / expensive and will work between trackdays (understand you should change it afterwards but dont want anything that is diabolical between changes!)

Suspension - not too clued up - thinking whiteline drop links, ARB, strut brace and coilovers - need some suggestions and advice on this though as they seem to be VVVV expensive.

Anyone know where i can get goodridge brake lines before the weekend?

Any suggestions on special oils / coolants that would be better suited to trackday use?

Thinking of toyo Proxes r1-r tyres too? want something grippy but not terrible in the wet or damp.

Sorry about all the questions - i just want to get things right first time and not have to do jobs twice or have to upgrade parts all the time!

CHEERS!

I'm in a similar position to you, just bought a rallye and its in for a service on friday including cambelt (was only done 20k ago or so but I hear they can go early so want it doing for peace of mind) and a few other bits and bobs. Can't coment about setting it up for the track but oil wise I've been recomended Total quartz 7000. Quite a few people on the 306 forum use it and my cars previous owner swears buy it so thats what I'l be sticking with.
I'm also interested to hear if theres anything else worth doing along with the cambelt kit.
One final thing I'm getting done is a compression test to make sure all the cylinders are in good nick and the engines sweet. Hopefully will be fine but it could warn of any head gasket issues before they happen.

Congrats on your purchase and hope you get it set up well for what you want. Keep us up to date!

is it worth getting the ancilliary belt / auxilliary belt dne at the same time? or is this the same belt? or not worth doing?

Also need some suggestions on brake discs and pads - cant seem to find ds2500 pads for 306 gti and im struggling with finding the right size brembo discs.

cheers
