IMHO they are very underated cars fairly good build quality (for a french car anyway) with the 1.8 16v quite a nippy car,the later cars are even better (you don't say what year you are looking at) the VTR has a good spec as well

The 1.8 VTR is alright, but there are three different VTR's so be careful.

Early 1.6 8v VTR - rubbish, 90bhp engine as used in Saxo VTR (and it isn't exactly fun in that) really basic trim, no alloys as standard. Avoid!

Late 1.6 16v VTR - fugly ph2 model but undoubtedly a better car all round. same engine as Saxo VTS but loses 10bhp in favour of economy, which I hear is pretty good. Cost a bit more than earlier cars obviously.

1.8 16v VTR - early cars basically. Has VTS interior which means decent seats and decent trim, plus some toys like A/C. They use Saxo VTS 5 spoke alloys as standard and have discs all round. They basically look like a VTS, only sit alot higher and ride alot softer....they're definately not sporty!
But really comfy, the engine pulls well for a low power unit (only 118bhp) and the economy's alright. On the downside the electrics are questionable and the clutch is usually set in concrete!
I only paid £350 for mine, and I'd say its a decent daily driver if you're splashing out anything up to £750. More than that, I'd probably look elsewhere.

There was a 1.8 8v VTR which was made in very small numbers, with good reason!

If you can afford it though, get a VTS. Cost the same to buy and pretty much the same to run, it's just the insurance. All worth it though, most underrated hot hatch going IMO. Cracks 100mph in just over 20secs, which isn't to be sniffed at for a sub 170bhp older car.
