Just wondered, in the petrol 1.6 and 1.8 models where does your temp gauge usually sit ?

Mines (1.6 2001, 66k miles) been sitting between 1/4 and 1/2 since I got mine in August.

Now, in the last couple of days here in Scotland the temperature outside has dropped right down to below freezing. Car temperature now going as high has just over the 1/2 in the couple of journeys I've done since the weekend, both quite short and didnt have time to leave it running to see what happened.

At the weekend it went from Fife to Aberdeen and back with no issue, and has often done, and goes to Edinburgh most days as well...

Just wondering if I am heading for problems....

My Laguna 2 temperature gauge always sits halfway between 1/4 and 1/2 way which I believe is normal. Have you checked the coolant level and is the heater still working normally. If the heater is not blowing out warm air then it probably means the coolant is low.

For the temperature gauge to be going over 1/2 way it could be something as simple as a stuck thermostat or something as costly as head gasket failure. To check for head gasket failure undo the oil filler cap and look for a white substance that looks like mayonaise. This is the most obvious sign the head gasket has failed.

One word of warning, if it is coolant related once all the coolant has drained out the temperature gauge will probably go back to normal and you might think the problem has gone away. Once the car starts trying to stall you know you are in BIG trouble and the smell is unmistakable.....

How do you chaps rate the car? I did a search around a year ago for the parents (they had a Laguna 1 that did 130k miles in 50+mpg comfort) and I was warned off the mk2, they bought a focus in the end.

I think it is by far the best looking car in the class from that era, so it's a shame the feedback I got was poor.

In a word Fragile. Cheap disposable transport and lots of car for your money. Unless you can fix things yourself steer well clear. Everything costs a fortune to fix and they are too complex.

Focus was probably a much better buy. I only bought mine because it has every possible option and was dirt cheap.

I too had a MK1 Laguna and it was great.
