My Saxo VTS has finally succumbed to the rear axle/bushes problem that I now realise is a very common thing.

Looking at around £400 to get a replacement fitted.
However it will obviously be a 2nd hand part and therefore could fail too. MIne has seen 98k but apparently some go much earlier.

Also proving difficult to find a VTS one which means I may need to go without ABS in the future.

Does anyone know of alternative options?

I am thinking of converting the car for track use so motorsport options may be ok.

Just look about for a recon axle try ebay i have seen a few recond units on there, it will be better in the long run plus you get a warranty with it. I wouldt was time and money on a 2nd hand unit as that could fail on you in no time at all. My vts is just about to hit 60k and my axle seems fine at the moment (touch wood) but i do know that at some point it will go and i will just folk out for a recon. Expensive but worth it.

The recon ones are 2nd hand.
I have been advised by 2 different garages that they are happy to do recon or use a recon part but it will likely fail soon after and may not pass MOT.

If i was in your shoes id just get the recond unit. Just for peace of mind as you know it will not fail on you in a 100 miles or so. Plus if you do have any issues with it you can just go back to the garage and get them to sort it out. hope your cars fixed soon mate

£400 seems a bit steep to me.
£300 would be nearer the mark
2nd hand beam £100
5hrs labour £200
Although I would suggest a recon beam .There's a firm in devon do mail order that i have used ,if they have one on the shelf you could have it next day, then they arrange collection of your old unit. They normally come without stub axles and you knock yours out and swop them into the replacement beam.Mountjoy engineering01404 881 325More work but much better long term .

will give them a call. Thanks.

Decision made though. This car is getting laid up for the winter and then transformed into a track/sprint car!!

Why would a recon beam fail? As long as it's been pulled apart, the beam tube is ok and all the bearings have been replaced there's no reason it shouldn't last another 5 years before needing a refresh again.

That's unless they've changed anything significantly from the 205, which as far as I'm aware they haven't.

From most people I have spoken to the beam tube itself is the issue.

Meaning that the beam tube design itself is faulty or that people are putting knackered rear beams back together?

I'd be very surprised if it were the former and if it's the latter then just don't use a scrap beam tube? On 205s you can use a base model beam tube, might be worth looking into.

Apparently the beam tube is prone to rotting.
I have yet to investigate fully but it has been mentioned to me that Citroen/Peugeot charge around £400 just for a new beam.

I have sourced a car for the winter so I can take my time on this now.
