Renault 5 GT Turbo vs 205 Gti?
Discussion
I only owned a 1600 205 gti for four days before it blew up so I can't really comment on that one. My 5gtt was the best car I ever drove. It handeled like it was part of me, it went like a fricken rocket and broke down all the time. For the two years I had it before I stuffed it into a roundabout it was broken or braking down for half of that time.
Still have it in my sisters garage though, could'nt quite get rid of it.

I've owned both - i've had my 1.9 205 GTI for a year now and from '99 to '06 i had a R5GTT - admitedly the 205 has been far more reliable to date (touches wood) compared to the R5, but when the 5 was on the road and running sweet it was always a joy to be in Although in fairness if i'd spent more time looking around rather than just buying the 1st 5 turbo i looked at back in '99 (was young & eager to get a classic hot hatch) i'd probably have bought a better and more reliable example
Both are fantastic cars in their own right, but then they are from an era where a hot hatch was exactly that and before safety features took over.

I owned a phase 1 GT Turbo about 1 1/2 years ago and i have too say it was epic !! They do need alot of care and attention and sometimes can be unreliable but I used mine day in day out for over a year and it only let me down once (a split water pipe 10 minute job too replace) but what they give you back in pure driving pleasure is worth every time you have too let it warm up and then let it cool down and change the oil every 5000 miles etc.....
I did 70k miles in an R5 GTT (years ago) and it was fantastic, thing is I understood that whacking the boost up without altering the fuel side of things would lead to engine melt down.
I just used to go to a rolling road once a year and make sure the carburation was spot on, with both of these cars IMHO they are best as they left the factory, so buy one (either) with the best bodywork going and spend money on new OEM shocks, springs, brakes, bushes etc, only then will you appreciate what the cars are all about.
So I would say the thread will go like this......
205GTi - Everyone on here thinks they are the best thing since sliced bread
R5GTT - My mate down the pub stories

1900 gti 205 the daddy every time, even a poor example still romps on...
being honest the 205 s build quilty can be patchy but i have had several, and they always got me home (with leaks etc)
but r5 turbos build quality is just too much of a gamble for me, i used to work on both of them over the years and gtis werent to bad the r5s were terribble..and that put me right off.. but i love the sound they made when they were working, always wanted to fit a renault 19 16v lump into a 5turbo!! fast and reliable...
