Here's my (convesation in the pub inspired) plan. Get my neighbours 205 GTI 1.6 track day car (stripped out, buckets, no cage and sticky rubber) and one of the hundreds of cheap 406 SRI Turbos that are about at the moment and do an engine and bits swap. Anyone done this conversion before and is there a flaw to the idea that I haven't considered?

I had a look at an Mi16 but it was so tidy I couldn't justify using that car for parts. I'm looking to uprate the brakes and suspension on the car with mostly after market bits or second hand stuff. Not too worried about the rear drums either as there isn't a lot of weight over the back and swapping rear suspension componants would be a coil over and redus arm jod to ditch the tortion bar completely. 406 front hubs and brakes (Brembo's?) and the 1.6 GTI (close ratio), 406 (standard to the engine) GTI6 (fancy pants) or Diesel (long ratio, loony top end) gear box options.

What do you think? Rob

Most are "Turbo-Technics" conversions and not a lot of help. Thanks anyway. smile

Not neccessarily.
Contact Crazylegs on 205gtidrivers - he has this conversion running 230bhp.

406 Sri conversions out-number Turbo-Technics conversions by at least 4-1 I’d think.

Found a solid 309 instead, more room (engine bay), better chasis and not on every street corner like the 205's seem to be as soon as you think about one. Thanks for all the help so far. After a bit of poking around there is some information about the conversion about. Seems (famous) fairly (last) straight (words) forward. I'll keep you up to date with what I decide to do. All the best, Rob.

North West Norfolk; there are six in my village.

I was under the impression that the 309's longer wheel base and heavier rear end give it less tendancsy to lift off oversteer?

I believe this is true, also 309s are becoming rarer due to 205 owners using them for spares. Id quite like to get one and put a V6 in it biggrin

V6 406 Coupe or XU20 Turbo would be sweet, just need a cat B or C write off with a good service history. I passed on a Goodwood 309 last year becuase it was a five door. The owner then M.O.T'd it and sold it on ebay for five times what he offered the car to me. Glad he got the best deal possible. smile

I haven't seen a decent 309 GTI three door for years and that was a blue one that the owner thrashed the Hell out of and scrapped it.

White with red bumpers but you can spray the car any colour you like. smile

My other car qualifies for a post classic race series as well as being my track day toy (not to mention the buy another car and get a divorce to go with it argument). So I'm concentrating on that otherwise The 309 would be mine.
