Im looking at converting my 1.9 to run on carbs or itbs. What exactly do i need to carry out the conversion? What sort of performance gains will i see? Also any downsides?

I'm not massively knowledgable but as noone else has replied I'll chuck in what I know.

For carbs you'd need the carbs, inlet manifold, adjustable fuel pressure regulator and a new fuel pump. I sold a full carb conversion kit for a 205 on ebay for £450 I think. That was with rebuilt Webber 45s. That lot wouldn't be difficult to fit and would see you gain 10-20hp with the potential for more with a high lift cam. Downsides are it's old technology, won't run as well as fuel injection and you might struggle to find
someone who knows how to set them up properly.

Throttle bodies weigh in at about £1500-2000. That'd include manifold, tbs and ecu and you'd need to get the ecu mapped at another £500ish. You'd see similar gains, probably slightly more, but much better driveability and great gains throughout the rev range.

If hp per pound is an issue drop the 8v and stick a 16v in. You'd pay about the same as for throttle bodies for a full conversion including the engine but have more power and more potential for power.

A quick google found me this.

Jenvey TB kit around £900! (it's only..£697 for the mi16)
Emerald ECU - £600
Emerald loom - £80
Mapping - £300 to £500

+ Vat

Installation up to £500 or free if you're handy with spanners. Either way you'll have to trailer it to the mappers. Much nicer than carbs and reliable too.

Crazy money for a little extra go!

You could get a nice turbo conversion for that....
