What's FAP and should it be avoided?
Discussion
Hi, I'm considering a HDI Citroen C8 or Pug 807 Mpv, but keep seeing adverts that say Non FAP, I'm realising that this is some sort of anti pollution system, but judging by the fact that cars are advertised as Non FAP then I assume it presents a problem and is worth avoiding? Is this the case or is it simply misunderstood? Also, if it's to be avoided then how can I identify if a car has it or not?
Thanks.
Thanks.
If at all possible I would buy NON-FAP.
It isn't just the filter (in the exhaust). They use a seperate tank to hold a catalysing fluid which help to burn off the soot particles that the filter catches. The fluid is expensive (EOLYS).
There is a sensor for the level of the fluid in it tank (one thing to go wrong). The fluid is added to the diesel in the fuel tank and there is a sensor on the fuel cap to detect when you put fuel in (there are some magnets involved which can fall off).
There is a pressure sensor across the FAP (which goes wrong) and there is a dedicated anti-polution ecu (you've guessed it! This fails as well!).
The actual filters can be cleaned but at a dealer they replace them.
Basically you pay a fortune for these things just so that they can deliver worse fuel economy as well as lower particular emissions.
Lots of used C8/807/Ulyses with FAP systems needing work.
edit: corrected fuel economy comment - I said lower but changed to worse to clarify.
