Hi all

I have an infuriating problem which is costing me a lot of money to resolve (so far unsuccessfully). I wonder if you can help?

I replaced the front bearings on my VTR beginning of July. Immediately afterwards, my offside brake started squeaking (note: the discs and pads were only 2000 miles old all-round at this point). I took it back to the grease monkey who replaced my bearings and he tried the copper lubricant trick. It worked for about 2 days, then it was back. But this time there was a horrible grinding noise when I braked (not really audible at high speed, but as you slow down it becomes terrifying). No shudder in the steering, no apparent loss of braking force.

In the end, I replaced the front discs and pads AGAIN. This seemed to cure the problem, for 3 days! It came back!!!

It's back to its old tricks of continually squealing (embarrassing to drive this car!) and a gut-wrenching graunching noise on braking. Discs look fine (no scouring apparent).

When I touch the brake pedal, the squeaking disappears, then with more force on the pedal the graunching sound starts.

ANy ideas? I am LOATHE to replace the discs and pads again and would really like to find the root cause.

Right now I am thinking that there is a problem with the caliper/pad system. Maybe a piston is not working properly or the springs are knackered or something.

PLEASE HELP

It might not be your brakes, I know the early saxos and 106's had flat faced cv joints and the later ones had convexed faced ones so you need to make sure you use the correct wheel bearings for the cv joints otherwise it will lead to all sorts of weird movements and noises from that area. Id say its worth you checking this to rule it out. I accidently fitted an early bearing to a late cv joint and it made all sorts of strange creaking sounds.

Hey daviewonder

Thanks for the reply. I DID give it to a real grease monkey (support the neighbourhood garage type of bonhommie ya know) and I would not be surprised if the numpty put the wrong bearings in. I find it remarkable that for years and years the car is very light on brakes (first disc replacement after 80000 miles!) and now, after a bearing replacement, I am changing them (as a precaution) every few days!

Good info on the bearing. I will take it to a citroen dealer to have a look see - and surely they will correct the bearing if it is that!
