My brother and I jointly bought an R5GTT this summer (although it is heavily modified). google for a buying guide and you should do perfectly well as I found quite a few good resources by doing just that.

Before you buy, be aware that insurance tends to be nasty on them as loads are owned by "interesting characters" (chavs), so lots have been crashed and they then become a higher risk car. as an example, insurance quotes on our car came in at 4-5 times what I pay for my elan which is worth 10 times as much and has been more heavily modified (this was using a motorsports insurance company). So we keep it off the road and will trailer it wherever it needs to be.

Look out for overheating/warped head, engine can move a lot which can sometimes cause the thermostat switch to the cooling fan to break (there are two separate fans)

Also check for rust, especially round the window screen frame.

Have to agree - join the RTOC

I was a member there when i owned my 5 turbo a few years back and the help & advice from other owners there was well worth the membership fee biggrin

As said above the best thing to do is join the the RTOC, a wealth of advice is available and they helped me before I bought mine.

I ended up buying mine from a member of the club:

Sold it about 3 years ago, but luckily it only lives 3 miles away (sold the house and car the same week!!)

CHEERS FOR THAT, IN THAT CASE ILL JOIN IT, I'VE HEARD THAT THE R5'S CAN BE A LITTLE UNRELIABLE, SO REALLY I CAN DO WITH AS MUCH KNOWLAGE AS POSS TO FIND A FAIRLY DECENT BUY.

I HEARD THAT SUM R5'S CAN BE INSURED AS A CLASSIC CAR?? IM NOT SURE HOW TRUE THIS IS BUT COULD SOMEONE PUT ME STRAIGHT LOL.

THANKS FOR THE INFO.

It's more to do with the insurance company than the age of the car as to whether you can insure a car as a classic. I can insure my 91 reg 205 as a classic if I want to.
