hi, can anyone help, i've got a 04 clio 182 it used to be fast but now it seems the vvt is not working, it drives ok apart from this. the car was lent to my parents for a year and was serviced by a small garage, my dad says it was not working before it was serviced. i thought maybe wrong oil or filter was used. now this happened when i had it before and i blasted it up the motorway and loads of water came out the back of the exhaust, so i drilled some small holes in the back boxes and all was ok. i tried driving it hard but its still not working, theres no warning lights on and renault want £100 a hour to look at it, i asked them if they have seen this problem before and they said no. i thought maybe it couid be the camshaft pulley or a oil pressure problem and they said no. they also would not let me talk to a rte when i was told they had to let you talk to rte's about technical problems. help....
the holes i drilled were tiny at the bottom of the back box to let the built up water drain out, that was about 3 years ago and theres no corrosion or any thing, i was hoping to find someone with the same problem, i drilled 1 tiny hole in each back box about a pint of water came out which had built up from short trips to work and back, i think its better for the car than to have a exhaust system full of water and putting pressure on the engine. i'm hoping to hear from someone who has heard of the vvt not operating
Surely you would have been better off blowing the water (condesation) out the exhaust by taking the car for a proper drive once in a while. Admittably this may not be easy without VVT working!
As said just take it to an independent garage that has diagnostic equipment rather than a Renault dealer.

Drilling holes in the backbox is not a good idea!! The water may have been moisture built up in the exhaust while it was standing or it may have been fuel.
How do you know the vvt is not working?? There is a solonoid on the top of the block that controls it, it could be this thats faulty, what are the symptons you are getting?? Are they just that it seems slower?? A common problem is the dephaser pulley going, when this goes the car sounds like a tractor.

as i said the holes i drilled were tiny and it was fine until my parents had it, the holes are not the problem as they have sealed up now, when i had it before it took off at 5 to 6 thousand revs but now it dont, it just drives like a normal 2.0l, it sounds ok,i did not really want to pay a garage if it was just replacing a sensor, just seeing if anyone has had the same problem
