My low oil light has been flashing on and off recently. Obviously the first time it happened I stopped driving and let it cool down to check the oil - and it happened to be completely full.

Does anyone have any ideas of what else would cause this? I was hoping it was just some dodgy french electrics but better not to risk it with things like this.

Thanks

Read the manual to check exactly what the light means.

Is it the actual electronic oil level display which is positioned within the speedo that is flashing? or is it the little oil can symbol that is with all the other warning lights between the speedo and rev counter?

If it is the oil can symbol that is actually an oil pressure warning not oil level. I had this problem a few months ago. On my car it turned out to be a faulty oil pressure switch giving a false reading, there was not actually an oil pressure problem.

Like you I found the light came on and off. Usually stayed off until the car had some heat in the engine then flicked on and off as I used the throttle. Suggest you get it checked out as you don't want to have a real oil pressure issue, nor do too many miles with a dodgy sensor I expect.

Theres a oil level sensor on the front of the engine block near the oil filter. It could be a faulty sensor, also because its down there it can get knocked or damaged easily.

I've had that too. All that caused was the electronic oil level display to cease working (it simply did not appear on start up), rather than a warning light to come on.

You're right it can get knocked easily - I managed it changing the filter during an oil change. Fortunately it fixed itself after a while.
