Went to see a 1999 Pug 306 1.6 petrol estate yesterday. In the middle of the dash, between speedo and rev counter, was a gauge that wasn't marked that had a scale from 'off' to '1/2' then 'full' (I think). Is this an oil level gauge? It didn't move from 'off'.

Also, there was a small stalk on the rh side by the wiper stalk that seemed to serve no purpose. Any ideas?

Just curious really.....

The small stalk was probably the remote control for the stereo but it may not work if an aftermarket head unit is fitted. I think the gauge was probably the oil level guage but it will only be active for the first 10 seconds or so when the ignition is switched on.

I'd agree with this on the gauge. On my Saxo for the first 10 seconds or so after turning the key its an oil level gauge and after that its oil temp.

i've got a 1999 S reg 306 diesel so should be the same..
- seemingly useless stalk on the right side of the steering wheel is for the radio (assuming the head unit is original, it doesn't work with some aftermarket ones) you can increase & decrease the volume & skip forward & back through cd tracks (or retune the radio)
- random dial in the speedo is the oil level gauge, it should light up & display the level for about 10 seconds once you switch the ignition on then turn itself off & go back to the 'empty' position again.

edit: just noticed you say the dial was between the speedo & rev counter so not sure on that one now but they did revamp the model just after mine was built

Yes, that's it. Obviously no oil in the one I saw, or gauge broken. I bought a Focus.
