Talk to me about these then guys. Mates just got hold of one( sadly only a 1600cc), and just after some info to help him about. I keep seeing, Phase 1/Phase 2, whats the difference?? Are there any parts that can be taken from other Pug vehicles, brakes etc? Any cheap mods or must do mods? Any help much appreciated!!

fantastic little cars, i've had 5 of them! 1600's are still plenty quick enough. Most people take various parts off the 1.9 as far as i can think. I upgraded my front brakes to the 1.9's which was easily done. Although i've had 5 of them i can't really suggest mods and most were daily hacks :P

I used to dribe 1.9 & 1.6 back to back all the time, wasnt a huge amount of difference in the outright performance really, if anything you could sometimes hustle the 1.6 along lanes a bit quicker. Cracking little cars.

Yeah this thread could go on for ages with advice-

Phase 1 generally had a few different bits of bodywork, rear valance, spoiler lip etc. I think there was less galvanised panels on the early cars, the dates at which that changed over seem to vary from person to person though. early 1.6's were 105Bhp and a bit weezy in my experience, but the 115Bhp was always plenty of fun and very revvy. Drums on the rear however and a different front hub/shaft setup which makes brake upgrades a bit more limited. This can be sorted with 1.9 hubs/shafts but thats something to consider. A decent 1.9 will generally be a bit more torquey low down, whether this suits the nature of the car is up to debate and I think why so many people still like the 1.6's.

Engine's are generally pretty strong but by high mileages will be getting a bit tired. Boxes are pretty tough but the diffs can fail if given a lot of hard abuse. After 91' I think they stopped the 1.6 and the 1.9 was sapped a bit in power because of the need for a CAT, however later Motronic management is generally a bit better then the good day/bad day Jetronic systems.

Generally rust shouldn't be an issue but check everything, can be good sign of previous crash damage, which isn't uncommon with these wink All bushes and rubber mounts will wear over time so if these haven't been renewed its worth uprating them with hard rubber items, which for a small sacrifice in comfort can have a big positive effect on the experience. Big brakes are easy with a bigger master cylinder, you can use anything right up to the 206 GTI 180 or 406 Brembo's if you really wish, and 406 M/C's can be big enough to match. 8v engines are tough and fun but there is plenty of scope for 16v conversions too! get over to the 205gtidrivers forum if you seriously considering one

Have you not driven one before? Once you do you'll get bitten by the bug and you'll have to get one too.

Rumour has it that if you dont like 205s you enjoy cross dressing!

Bloody good point!

Although I am feeling much better about my 205 today, even though the engine is on its last legs it's still great fun to drive smile

Woo, spooky, I've been thinking about one for myself recently!
Now, sorry about the thread hi-jack, but my question is- Am I mad? I'm thinking of chopping in my 2000 reg Polo GTi and getting a 205 GTi? Should I do it? I don't use the car every day, but fairly regularly, but I do have backup transport... So, should I do it? My heart says yes yes yes!

Under those circumstances do it, modern things really don't even compare to a good 205. Be prepared to spend money to get the best out of it though.

There's endless things you can do to it in terms of upgrade - engine, gear box, brakes, suspension - all relatively easy and not too expensive, but expect to spent regularly!

Various other cars are used as doners - usually the 309 for the brakes/rear beam and the 306 for the GTI6 engine or the 405 for the MI16 engine.

Go for it and have fun, it can be painful sometimes (especially on the pocket), I can't see me ever getting rid of mine - but that's mainly because I've spent so much friggin money on it I'd never recoup not even a fraction.

I had one of the first 1.6s from new - a "C" reg, must have been about '86. Sometimes wonder if it could be as good as I remember it, as surely new hatches must have caught up. Reading this thread says no, they haven't!

205Gti and DC2 Intergra Type R also when new were two road cars I have best memories of. Reminds you where modern cars have gone wrong - all weight and no feel. The thought of an R26.R still rears its head from time to time purely cos its closest equivalent. Unfortunately, my brother rolled mine!

well I invested in a roughish early 205 1.9 2 years ago and its brilliant, I love it. Although it now sports a pair of webers and a nice peaky engine, decent suspension and is now caged. But I loved the std one we had years ago so this was a natural choice for me.
You can do without all the extras of newer cars, they're relatively easy to work on, parts are not too expensive, parts are also easy to get to and there's a brilliant forum in the name of 205GTIdrivers.com. 1.6 or 1.9 it doesn't really matter as they're both a hoot to drive.

Would the statement: New cars are generally ScensoredT compared to a 205 sum it up within reason? I:E Gti Polo (Yawn)Fiesta ST (Double Yawn) etc etc etc...

Even when mine had seats and stuff in it she was still 1 Million times better than most other things under £20K from the modern yet similar market on the road that had recently lived in a show room, rusty rear quarter panels and all...

With Webers, a rebuild and other fancy odds and ends (nearly £6K worth of odds and ends tbh) she fends off all sorts of so called "hot hatches", tuned to the ass Mini Cooper S's "running 230bhp (my arse)" and Ricer rockets like Civic Type R's, all boring, sorry to say it as i'm sure people love them but really, you can attach as many fish 'n' chips and turbo's to it as you like, nothing will come out of a corner like a 205 and more to the point, not much will go into a corner or around it like a 205 unless it's really special (or a 309 smile) or well out of the price band at which these cars compete and I can honestly say it's true, Silverstone not too long ago was awash with turbo jap imports and all manner of other "fast" things and although there top end was far higher than mine and would get past on the long GP circuit straights, show most of them a corner and it was like "oh scensoredt! What's that curvy looking thing" in the cars behind, laughed my ass off.

Every one of them will have some sort of issue, it's a 20yr old motor at the end of the day but as previously stated, parts are cheap, they're easy to work on, they look sexual and go like the clappers... Is there anything else you really want out of a car?
