2003 Clio CD player fault

Hi all,
One of the many things I need to fix on my OH's car is the faulty CD player. The radio works ok (it crackles a bit because some swine nicked the ariel, but that's another story) but when a cd is inserted into the slot nothing happend except a 'booop' noise and "CD ERR" on the central display.

Has anyone experienced this? My job at the weekend is to fasion some keys from a wire coathanger to remove the thing and make sure nothing has worked loose at the back but other than that I'm not sure what else could be wrong.

Sorry to be silly, but have you tried some other discs ? Ours sometimes does this with a scratched disc.

Yeah, I've tried quite a few with no luck as it used to do that to us before failing totally.

faulty unit I am afraid, I had to have ours replaced under warranty

Balls, the car is now out of warranty. New units aren't cheap either.
