Hi, i know this has been discussed before but i'm after some views on what to do. My 182 is nearly 4 years old but has only done 15k miles. It is due a service and having read horror stories about the aux belt snapping (and taking out the cambelt), i would like the auxiliary belt changed at the same time. However i have been advised by a specialist to also change the cambelt as this will be due at 5 years or 72k miles. To me it seems excessive to change the cambelt at only 4 years/15k on a modern car. I can however see this as an advantage come resale time. So what are my options? Including service:

1) Aux belt change c.£300
2) Full aux belt change including tensioners c.£400
3) Full aux belt change including tensioners, plus full cambelt change c.£550

And to top it off, should i insist on genuine parts or not as this will add on £120+.

Any advice or views much appreciated!

Cheers

£400 to change the aux belts seems excessive.

IIRC (and I may not as I am a bit hungover today!) the aux belt should be changed on 36k or 5yrs with the cambelt, which ever comes first. So IMO the aux belt should be ok for another year. The horror stories of aux belts snapping on these cars stem from the fact the many Renault dealerships ignored the rule to change at 36k and leave them to the 5yr/72k rule with the cambelt - even so incidences of them snapping is rare and overstated IMO.

If you decide to change the aux belt early as a safety measure I'd agree with specialist that you should change the cambelt as well, as otherwise you will be paying for the aux belt to be changed again a year later when you do the cambelt at 5yrs old (at least in terms of labour if not an actual 'new' aux belt).

FYI if your car does not have air con the cambelt change should be cheaper as it is less labour.

I changed my cambelt early as the aux belt change at 36k had been missed. Ended up doing cambelt at 48k/4yrs old I think. I could'nt live with the risk of it going at the back of my mind for another year!

Thanks for the replies! So I either change both belts now or wait and do both in a year at the 5yr/72k service. I actually thought the aux belt on the RS Clios should be changed at 3yrs/36k (not 5yrs/36k like the non-RS Clios), but may be wrong. Either way spending 10% of the value of the car on a service is a shocker. I dread to think what it would cost at Renault...

No it is 36k or 5yr for aux belt on RS Clios'. The non-RS is 72k/5yr with cambelt - that is where the confusion comes from at the dealerships I believe.

Aux belt change at 36k seems to be recommended in other threads.. confused! Might just get it all done then it's fine for 3 years. Still cheaper than my £1500 elise service!

Why are you confused? Thats what I said above. Aux belt should be changed at 36k or 5yr old, which ever comes first!

I did a 36K service on a 182 for £190. No wonder garages charge the earth, it's a st of a job. Sooooooo tight for space in there!!!

Renault recommend 5 year/36k on the Aux Belt and 5 year/72k for the Cambelt, AFAIK.

Mine was purchased at 41k and I paid £580 for both belts to be changed and a full 36k "style" service (as the history provided with the car wasn't quite as I'd have liked) at a reputable specialist in Cheshire - well worth the trip!

Renault wanted over £800 for the belt changes (plus VAT) and a further £200 for a service. Unsurprisingly, I went to the specialist (Birchdown, to be precise - who come very well recommended, they really know their onions!)

Does your local garage have the correct timing tools? If they aren't timed properly the car will not run properly.. Given that the parts are over £200 for both belts, I'd be a little wary as to whether your local garage know what they are doing!

Just thought i would update this, i got the aux belt and cambelt (full kit) replaced by Rentec in Portsmouth a few weeks ago for just under £600 including a full service. Over-cautious perhaps but nothing to do for a long time now!

I could have sworn I only paid about £450 for cambelt & aux belt at a Renault main dealer about a year ago.
