My father has owned a 1.6 205 gti for the last 15 years and it has been an exceptional car.

However he would like to give it a thorough refresh and hence would like to know the best place to take it.

I have heard bad reports about LAD and Justgtis- are there any places phers can recommend?

Car is located on the south coast.

Cheers!

"Miles" at Pugracing is based somewhere near southampton and is well known on 205gtidrivers.com. I've heard good reports on his work and his costs are pretty good too.
I'm sure there are a few others that can also be recommended.

What are you looking to do exactly? A lot of the work on the 205 is relatively easy (by modern standards) as i'm sure you know.

I'm not sure as to the specifics. The car only has 40k miles but needs some new paint and engine work.

Just enough to bring it to tip top condition.

Thanks for the recommendation smile

Contact Miles Horne - Pug Racing.
He's now based near to you in the New Forest, had my 205 converted to Mi16 back in 2004 smilesmile

I'll second Miles's work. Heard nothing but praise for his things, I even have a few of his parts on my 205.

He's far too busy at the moment to fix my 306 though. Can't find a local Peugeot specialist in/near Southampton who can take on the work. Looks like it may go to the big scrappy in the sky... weeping

Also I find it difficult to get to his place tbh - it's in the middle of nowhere!

I bought a 1.9 from Just GTIs and throughout the 3 years of ownership, it ran like a dream and I found James (owner) very helpful at all times.

It was my only car and was used for daily commuting. As such I didn't have time to drive up and down the country at weekends to find a good example. Hence, I was aware that I was paying a premium when I bought it, which I was happy to do.

If you think you could buy one in the condition that mine was in, for less than a grand, then good luck to you... wink

It needs a massive service including all belts, oil, filters, brake and power steering fluids, four new tyres, new discs and pads on the front, drums and shoes on the back, new handbrake cable. New clutch, gear linkages are sloppy, interior is essentially fked - although all the electric windows and electric sunroof work. New windscreen also needed, new numberplates and probably a new exhaust and cat.
I think that just about covers it. May need a suspension and rear beam overhaul too.

Only thing that is working well is the engine, so plan is to take it out and put it in a 205. Maybe uprate the turbo and intercooler during the swap with a new ECU...

Yeah, and for the £2k-ish it would cost to put it back on the road I could buy another, better one, or spend half that putting the motor into a 205.

Currently looking for a black 5 door diesel to go ahead with the swap. Red 306 alloys on it, lowered 60-80mm all round and finished in satin hammerite. Interior removed and replaced with one bucket seat. Hoping for 0-60 in around 7 seconds and 60mpg.

Miles (Pugracing.com) or Dan Taylor at Drive Engineering in Sussex.

PM me if you want either contact numbers. I wouldn't take any of my pugs to anyone else. Including anyone mentioned on here, and i have experienced them, unless you want them coming back with generally shoddy work, things like the wrong thread gearbox retaining bolts = wrecked block from that 'self-praising' singer above.mad
