Just had a bit of a scare driving home in my 172 Cup. Came off the motorway after spending approx 30min at a steady cruise at reasonably high speed (pulling 4.5k to 5.5k revs most of the time), as I approached the roundabout off the slip road the oil light and red STOP lit up on the dash. Was nowhere to stop sensibly so I ended up laping the roundabout to enter the nearby service, during which time the warning lights were flicking on and off.

I checked the oil on the dipstick and there was plenty in there. Nothing dripping out of the bottom of the engine. On starting up the electronic oil level display showed oil was ok. Engine sounded fine and drove fine when I set off again.

I was hoping this was just a temporary glitch, but it appears not. As I continued my journey the oil warning light continued to come on whenever I slowed down to a near stop from speed. It would always go off once underway again. Does'nt appear to be related to revs, just slowing down and braking.

The only other time I've seen this light come on was when I parked across a slope briefly and it went out shortly after coming on - I assumed this was because the oil had obviously been tipped to one side of the sump in an abnormal way, tricking the sensor into thinking oil was low.

Immediately prior to this happening this evening I had just driven for approx 2hrs straight on a mixture of motorway, A and B roads (about 50/50 split). Driving the car pretty hard all the way - but this is nothing unusual in itself!

Have I broken it? paperbag I'm hoping this is just a dodgy sensor.

I've now read the manual. Light was the oil pressure warning light, rather than level as I had assumed. Hope this isn't serious.

Had the car checked over at Renault today. Faulty oil pressure switch is the culprit. Oil pressure inside the engine is fine. Phew! biggrin

On a side note they did change the bonnet catch mechanism as part of the recall due to a few unfortunate bonnet opening incidents a while back (think it made Watchdog IIRC). Funny thing is I was under the impression the recall had already been done by a different Renault dealership (which amounted to smearing grease over the mechanism, catch, and slam panel. That is all) scratchchin Apparently it was not on the computer as having been done and on inspection it had'nt either! So now I have a nice shiny new bonnet catch.
